16 found in van in apparent case of human smuggling

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- U.S. immigration agents are investigating an apparent case of human trafficking.

Police say more than a dozen people from Mexico were found in a van in Kannapolis.

Highway Patrol troopers stopped the van on Interstate 85 at Dale Earnhardt Boulevard after receiving a tip.

"One of the persons in the van's family member or friend called 911 and that's when troopers got involved in it," said Sgt. Ken Schull with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police say 16 passengers were in the van, which had Texas license plates.

"They appear to be in good shape," Schull said of the passengers.

Agents with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement will determine the immigration status of the passengers.

Two people were arrested. It's not clear if they were just driving the van or if they were actively involved in trying to smuggle people across the border.

"This is unusual. We hear it happening a good bit in Texas or California. It's unusual coming through Charlotte but it's the day and time," Schull said.

Sources believe that North Carolina was the van's final destination and that passengers were going to be dropped off at various locations.

If the passengers are here illegally they would be entitled to a hearing, which would determine if they will be deported.
