Illegal immigrant who skipped flight to Mexico arrested in Boston

The Associated Press - Wednesday, April 12, 2006

    MINNEAPOLIS

An illegal immigrant who was ordered to return to his native Mexico after authorities found him living in a suburban Twin Cities high school has been arrested after a burglary attempt in Boston, police said.

Francisco Serrano, 22, was arrested in connection with the March 29 burglary in Boston. According to a police report, he broke into an apartment early that morning armed with a knife. Police said they arrived at the scene to find Serrano and the victim struggling on the street.

KSTP-TV reported Tuesday that the Boston district attorney will prosecute Serrano on a felony charge of breaking and entering, which carries a 2 1/2-year sentence.

"It's probably one of the more bizarre cases we've had involving a person who is not a U.S. citizen involved in a crime," said Dave Procopio, the district attorney's spokesman.

If convicted, Serrano would serve time in Boston, then be turned over to federal agents for deportation.

In January 2005, a custodian at Apple Valley High School discovered Serrano sleeping in the school's auditorium. Serrano said he'd been sleeping there three weeks because he needed a warm place to stay.

Serrano had entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2002. It expired six months later, and immigration officials said Serrano was here illegally.

Police arrested him on trespassing charges, but his case sparked an outpouring of support. He eventually was ordered to leave the United States because he was here illegally.

On Jan. 5 of this year, he hugged supporters at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and walked toward the security screeners, but his plane ticket was never used.

According to the Boston police report, Serrano was living in a motel in the Boston suburb of Braintree.

Well, did we get our airline money back?

Geeezzz....see, you can not even trust these people with a plane ticket. They will have to be bussed home...half illegals....half armed guards.

Lets get started, this is going to take awhile.

    What kills me ...

is that when they found the guy in the high school, all these bleeding hearts gave him an outpouring of support...."oh poor little illegal immigrant....oh boo hoo......"

I remember reading an article abou this jerk......he said all the people who supported him at the high school were like family to him, he would miss them in Mexico and how warm the American people are for wanting to help him.....

he should go hump someone elses leg.

Charge reduced against immigrant who lived in Minn. high school

BOSTON -- Prosecutors on Friday reduced the charge against an illegal immigrant who hid in a Minnesota high school for weeks, then was arrested months later in Boston after a judge ordered him to leave the country.

Francisco Javier Serrano, 22, was arrested in Boston earlier this month after police found him with a knife struggling with the tenant of an apartment in the city's North End.

Serrano, a native of Mexico, appeared briefly in Boston Municipal Court on Friday, where prosecutors reduced the original charge against him from armed home invasion to breaking and entering in the nighttime.

David Procopio, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, said prosecutors took into account that Serrano did not hurt anyone and had only a minor criminal record for trespassing in Minnesota. Under the new charge, Serrano faces a maximum sentence of 2 1/2 years. He would be deported after serving the time.

Serrano is being held at the Suffolk County jail on $25,000 cash bail.

Serrano overstayed a 2002 tourist visa to live with his father and attend high school in suburban Minneapolis. He was embraced by Minnesotans after he was discovered sleeping in a high school auditorium in January 2005.

A developer gave him a place to live and hired an immigration lawyer for him.

Serrano waved goodbye to supporters at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Jan. 5, the deadline for him to leave the country. But he apparently never boarded his plane for Mexico.

Is the father here legally or illegally or did anyone bother to check?

    Ugh!

    Why not deport him now?

Oooh, the border is still open so he would just come back.

    Right.

    Duuh.

I've heard it costs $80,000 a year to house a prisoner for a year.

So he's sucking us for $240,000 plus a plane ticket home in 2.5 years.

Hopefully we'll have our Wall of Americans up by then, eh?

Yea i live an hour from there. They ended up treating him like a Celeb. No the ticket money was lost unless he rerouted his trip for an extra few bucks.

He was living in the school basement! And came up during school hours to socialize with all the kids. The judge slapped his hand, patted him on the back. And washed his hands of it. They didn't even follow him onto the plane.
