Gov. Brewer says she, Obama agree to work together

Gov. Brewer says she, Obama agree to work together

WASHINGTON – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she and President Barack Obama have agreed to try to work together on a solution to the nation's immigration and border security woes.

Brewer also says Obama assured her that most of the 1,200 National Guard troops he is sending to the southern border will be coming to her state. Brewer recently signed a tough new immigration enforcement law that requires police to check people's immigration status.

Obama has denounced the law as discriminatory.

Brewer spoke Thursday after a half-hour meeting with Obama in the Oval Office.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's planned meeting Thursday with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer faces a protest from opponents of Arizona's new immigration law.

Opponents say the law, which Brewer signed, is discriminatory and say Obama isn't doing enough on immigration reform.

Brewer is to meet Obama at the White House, and opponents said they will hold a demonstration there to denounce the Republican governor, "the discriminatory Arizona law she signed" and "President Obama's halfhearted leadership on immigration reform."

Supporters of an overhaul of U.S. immigration law have accused Obama of not pushing Congress hard enough to pass immigration legislation. Some have said Arizona's law and tough immigration laws in other states are symptoms of a broken immigration system.

Arizona's new law, scheduled to take effect July 29, will require police enforcing any other law to examine immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion a person is in the country illegally. It also makes being in the country illegally a state crime.

Obama says the law is the wrong approach to illegal immigration and his administration is combing through it and preparing for a possible legal challenge. Brewer has been soliciting donations from the law's supporters to defend it.

In an interview Wednesday, Brewer said she hoped she and Obama could agree on solutions to improve border security.

Brewer said she wants to know how Obama's plan to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the border with Mexico will affect Arizona and what else he has in mind to tighten border security.

She said she'll make a pitch for her own proposal calling for more troops on the border, deployment of helicopters and surveillance drones and completion of a border fence.

The White House said it would lay out for Brewer the "unprecedented resources" dedicated over the past 16 months to secure the border.

Exactly right, the law discriminates against his criminal "undocumented voters", that's why he hates it.

The only immigration reform the imposter in chief supports is wide open borders, never ending illegal immigration, amnesties and we "nasty gringos" picking up the tab for illegal alien healthcare, welfare, education and other benefits. An endless supply of cheap labor and new instant citizens and voters. We have been sold out by the Benedict Arnolds in DC masquerading as representatives of the American people.

Sometimes "unprecedented" resources (that's lawyerspeak for a half hearted attempt, just for show) just aren't enough. Not when you have a mass scale crime wave and subversion of our authority taking place.

Ariz. Gov. Brewer, Obama hold Oval Office meeting

    By Michael D. Shear
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Thursday, June 3, 2010; 3:12 PM

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said President Obama told her in a meeting in the Oval Office today that he would send White House staff to her state to discuss efforts to secure the border with Mexico.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Republican governor said her talk with the president was cordial, despite their disagreement over the widely criticized state law she signed in April giving police greater powers to enforce immigration rules.

She said that Obama declined to discuss whether the Justice Department plans to file a lawsuit to block the law before it takes effect next month.

Given OBlabber's past history of totally ignoring repeated pleas for help on the AZ border - I don't put much stock in whatever he told Brewer.

Lets wait and see what SHE does. She has been adamant about getting and keeping this law passed. She has shown more balls then the current metrosexual squatting in the WH.

This is just more window dressing, designed to defuse opposition to amnesty.

'Bama has been channelling Bill Clinton - a.k.a. Slick - since day one. Just as with Slick, it's necessary to essentially ignore what he says and focus on what he's trying to do. The Justice Department is challenging Arizona's illegal immigtration control law. That's what 'Bama's about. And he'll use the challenge to demonstrate that we really do have to give amnesty to all those illegals, because the current situation is so confusing.

Pro-Americans will see thru this nonsense, but 'Bama doesn't care about us. As someone posted on another forum, "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and those are the ones to concentrate on."

Obama: Most Guard troops likely to come to Arizona border

    Howard Fischer, Arizona Daily Star
    June 3, 2010 12:27 pm

Gov. Jan Brewer said President Obama told her today that a "majority'' of the 1,200 National Guard soldiers he plans to deploy to the Southwest border likely will end up in Arizona.

But Brewer, who met with the president for about a half hour, said his administration won't provide her with details until later this month.

The governor also said she specifically told the president the federal government needs to build more fencing along the international border.

"I was not successful,'' Brewer said.

Despite that, the governor was pleased with the outcome.

"I feel it was a successful meeting,'' she said.

Much of that, Brewer said, is based on that commitment from Obama to keep her in the loop about his plans for the border. That includes the details about the 1,200 soldiers and how he plans to use the extra $500 million he wants Congress to approve for border security.

"We assume that in two weeks we will know exactly how many will be deployed to Arizona,'' she said.

"The numbers are not fixed from what I understood today. But he felt the majority of all the resources will probably be coming to Arizona,'' Brewer said. "So for that, we are grateful.''

The governor said the president was conciliatory in other ways.

"He did concede that they did not respond to my letters in an appropriate manner,'' the governor said of messages sent not only to him but also to various federal agencies. Brewer said the president said "they should have responded earlier and didn't, and that would not happen again in the future.''

And to back that up, Brewer said the president gave her and her aides the names and phone numbers of staffers who can be contacted directly.

Brewer said, though, the president declined to discuss the possibility the federal government may file its own lawsuit challenging SB 1070.

Obama has said he has concerns that law, set to take effect at the end of July, could lead to racial profiling. But Brewer said she came away with the impression he would not be making any decision on litigation personally.

"He indicated that he was leaving that up to the Department of Justice and did not want to discuss that in any kind of detail today,'' she said.

The governor has previously said critics of the law either have not read it or do not understand that. But she would not speculate whether either of those apply to Obama.

"He's a well-learned man and a lawyer,'' she said. "If he has read the law, I'm sure he understands it.''

The White House said that Obama has read the law, which includes requirements for when police have to check immigration status of those they stop and makes being in this country illegally a violation of state law.

Brewer said the president discussed his desire for "comprehensive immigration reform.'' The governor said she told him that needs to wait.

"I told him we needed our border secured and then we could address some of those other issues,'' Brewer said.
