Two men were arrested Tuesday near Douglas after authorities found more than 1,400 pounds of marijuana in their tractor-trailer rig.

Enrique Calderon-Ballesteros, 23, and Pedro Calderon-Ballesteros, 21, were taken into custody after authorities began investigating tire marks left in an area popular with smugglers, according to a news release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The investigation began Monday after ICE learned that a vehicle had illegally entered the country about nine miles east of Douglas, the release said. Authorities went to the area, where they found fresh tire tracks.
Some of the tracks had been partially brushed out in an effort to hide them, the release said. But authorities were able to track them to Geronimo Trail Road, where they led westbound into Douglas.
Later that day, a similar set of tire tracks was found going into a storage yard in Douglas from which a strong odor of marijuana emanated, the release said.

ICE agents, Douglas police, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife officer, and the Douglas Border Patrol Vehicle Response team began watching a white trailer in the yard, the release said.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Calderon-Ballesteros' were seen moving marijuana from the trailer into a tractor-trailer rig, the release said.
The pair were arrested on U.S. Highway 191 after they were pulled over on a traffic stop, according to the release. They initially refused to pull over, and when they finally did they fled.

After a short chase, they were taken into custody.
Seventy-nine packages of marijuana were removed from the tractor-trailer rig.

Both men are Mexican citizens. They made an appearance in U.S. District Court in Tucson on Wednesday.
