Will Utah be magnet for undocumented immigrants?

Rep. Stephen Sandstrom says he is more convinced than ever Utah needs Arizona-style immigration reform or it will face a wave of undocumented immigrants fleeing Arizona’s tougher enforcement.

Sandstrom — who returned early Tuesday from a visit to the Arizona-Mexico border with Utah House Speaker David Clark and Rep. Paul Ray — said if Utah doesn’t act it could become a destination for human traffickers and drug runners.

“All it really did was strengthen my resolve to get a bill passed here in Utah because, talking to the Border Patrol, there’s absolutely no doubt there’s a huge group that will be heading north to Utah,â€

“[i]I want the bill to be a very prudent, measured bill that in no way will make people who are Hispanic ... feel threatened in any way,â€

alleycat: Unfortunately, due to media influence, many people believe they need to stay out of Arizona or face instant arrest. Now, don't get me wrong, I hope all illegals think that way. But I recently learned that a minority business group, primarily African American, is worred about holding a conference in AZ. They think they might be arrested. I asked one of them if they planned to break any laws in Arizona and she seemed shocked. It gave me an opportunity to point out that police could only stop someone if they first broke a non-immigration law, such as a traffic offense. I was able to then explain that since she's African AMERICAN, there was absolutely no threat. And the moral of the story is, there's a lot of misinformation out there primarily due to our prez going off half cocked and the media suggesting that Americans are going to be jailed if they set foot in AZ.

Isn't it amazing that the Honorable House Speaker David Clark, accompanied by an ARMED escort (read, 'the border is as secure as it's ever been'), observed this border and saw the devastation for himself? Now, why can't he spread that word?
