Alamance County has spent $100K defending sheriff in DOJ lawsuit

GRAHAM, N.C. — Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson’s legal defense against a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit has cost the county more than $100,000 to date, according to the Burlington Times-News.
The Times-News reports that, in the past year, the county’s tab in the case has amounted to $108,112. The latest payment of $32,994 was made Aug. 14 to the Turrentine Law Firm.
County commissioners on Monday approved county attorney Clyde Albright’s request to transfer $50,000 from the county’s legal department professional services account to another account created specifically for the defense in the lawsuit against Sheriff Johnson, according to the paper.
County officials intend to request that the DOJ reimburse the county for all legal fees once the case is settled.
The DOJ filed a complaint against Johnson in December, 2012 claiming his office was practicing “discriminatory law enforcement directed against Latinos.”
