NC College board reconsiders illegal immigrant policy

College board reconsiders illegal immigrant policy

ASHEBORO -- State community college officials will consider re-opening their doors to illegal immigrants.

Several members of the State Board of Community Colleges said during a committee meeting at Randolph Community College today that they favored allowing illegal immigrants to attend at out-of-state tuition rates.

Undocumented students have been barred from degree programs at the state's 58 community colleges since May, 2008, while officials study the issue.

"These young people are here with basically no fault of their own," said board member Joanne Steiner of Wake Forest. "I am highly opposed to creating a subculture of people who have no hope."

Other members agreed that they did not want to close the doors of education for any group of students.

"If a student is sufficiently motivated to pay out-of-state tuition, it should not be our role as community college educators to stand in their way," said board member Dr. Stuart Fountain, a retired dentist from Asheboro.

They asked system staff to draw up a recommendation that would allow the admission of undocumented immigrants who graduated from U.S. high schools, the same policy that the University of North Carolina system uses.

The board's policy committee will consider whether to send that recommendation to the full board at its next meeting in August. It will take the board several more months to set a final policy.

I agree! So the way to create that "hope" is to deport them( along with their illegal invading parents) back to their countries of orgin so they can fully participate.

How is it creating "hope" to permit an illegal invader to attend our colleges when they cannot legally work in this country to begin with?

I guess next, you will be claiming it denies "hope" to those who have completed their college studies and are not permitted to work in this country! You give an inch to these people and they take a mile!

That's how pro-illegal invader lobby operates. One small step at a time!

Not 1 cent of state money should go to any community college, university or otherwise that admits illegal aliens. They need to be deported with their invading parents as a family, No Child Left Behind.

Who is going to call ICE on these illegal aliens, who are not allowed to work in America?

No because these same illegals will think they can earn US scholarships and awards.

Everyone needs to understand what the non college route undocumented students are doing to the Class Ranking of American Students trying to get into American Colleges.

There needs to be a class action lawsuit against the public school systems for defrauding American Citizens out of College.

I firmly think the Dream Act is trying to do a cover up of the mess our government is in. The government is trying to make it legal the abuse to American Students with the Dream Act

    NC College

Guess what will happen when hundreds of these Illegal immigrants graduate college? We will be forced to give them the right to work.
How could we be so cruel to let these poor families spend thousands on college education and still deny them jobs in this country.....?
It is coming folks. Why should any foreign student apply for a visa to come here for college? Cheaper to cross the river, illegally.

Amazing that none of NC's distinguished legislators can make up their minds. Over how many sessions has this issue flipped one way or another? Yes to illegals, no to illegals, yes to instate tuition, no to instate tuition, both on the community college and university level. I am getting a bit dizzy.

No kidding Vortex! I was thinking the same thing ! How many times do these people have to re-visit this issue. It's as wrong today as it was yesterday to allow illegal invaders to attend our colleges. What the heck do they need to re-open this issue for!

No doubt that the pro-illegal lobby has been working overtime - behind the scenes to get this policy reversed. You can bet this is what has changed!

Doesn't the taxpayers fund the community colleges? They should have to follow immigration laws.

Personally, I believe most of this is about the money. Out-of-state tuition is where the real money is at. In-state tuition for North Carolina's community colleges is fairly inexpensive. Money is a strong motivator and greed frequently forces good people to make bad decisions because money blinds them to all the facts. Fact: Illegal aliens aren't allowed to work in the United States, nor are they allowed to be here!
