HICKORY, NC - Catawba Valley Community College will admit illegal immigrants this fall, though they must pay out-of-state tuition.

"We're going ahead with our current policies, that we had prior to May," said Garrett Hinshaw, president of CVCC.

The college admitted illegal or undocumented immigrants last year, but announced it would suspend this policy after the North Carolina Community College Systems received a letter from state Attorney General Roy Cooper's office in May. The letter stated post-secondary education is a benefit that undocumented or illegal aliens aren't eligible to receive.

According to a press release on the N.C. Community College System's Web site, the system received a letter from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in July stating that illegal immigrants could attend college.

The letter, which was posted on the Web site, said "admission to public post-secondary educational institutions is not one of the benefits regulated by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996." It goes on to say "states must decide for themselves whether or not to admit illegal aliens into their public post-secondary institutions. States may bar or admit illegal aliens from enrolling in public post-secondary institutions either as a matter of policy or through legislation."

Hinshaw said CVCC will admit anyone who cannot provide documentation for the fall semester. Under the temporary policy community colleges implemented while waiting for clarification, illegal and undocumented immigrants could not take classes for credit after the summer semester.

Although illegal immigrants are eligible to enroll for credit classes, they must pay out-of-state tuition. At CVCC, that means they're paying $3,732.80 for a full semester of 16 or more credit hours, as opposed to in-state students paying $672. If students were paying by credit hour, the out-of-state students pay $232.30, as opposed to in-state students paying $42 per credit hour.

Hinshaw said he suspected many community colleges decided to revert to their old policies when deciding whether to admit illegal immigrants this fall. He said the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges will likely develop a uniform policy for the entire system this year.

"I think they'll make a formal stance on the policy. They'll take their time, to ensure it will be a good policy," Hinshaw said. "Their next meeting is in October, and I'm sure it will be discussed then."

Great! So someone without any documents can enroll and take Chemistry and Biology classes along with other skills that could be harmful against Americans in the wrong hands. Do they teach flight instruction too?

I don't anticipate that alot of illegal aliens will take them up on that offer - for one reason. They don't want to pay for college, much less at out-of-state rates. They don't think they should have to pay for college. Now I know why they call them "dreamies".

Soon we'll start hearing sob stories about how they can't afford to pay out-of-state rates, and how dare we take their "dream" from them. It seems as if they more they get, the more they want.

And they will take seats from our kids if they do decide to pay the price.
