CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - U.S. Representative Sue Myrick held a press conference Monday morning to defend the 287g immigration program.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Chipp Bailey and Jim Pendergraph, former Mecklenburg Sheriff and former Executive Director of ICE, also spoke during the meeting.

The 287g program gives local law enforcement the authority to enforce national immigration laws.

The program has been successful across the Charlotte region and the country for deporting illegal immigrants.

However, a recent report from the Government Accountability Office criticized how local agencies use the program.
