Clinton the new target in immigration battle

Excerpts from our syndicated columnists and others about Democratic presidential front runner Hillary Clinton and illegal immigration:

Froma Harrop, Providence Journal: What about New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens? The last thing New York needs is another fishy form of ID, especially one stamped by the state. Even Mike Bloomberg, New York City's open-borders mayor, worried that the feds would not accept these licenses at airports once the Real ID law goes into effect.

Hillary Clinton argues that illegal aliens are coming here anyway, so giving them licenses is just recognizing reality. If that's her stand, why bother with immigration laws at all? People will always be coming here illegally, and so there will always be a new reality to recognize.

Democrats need a serious response to illegal immigration. The only effective approach is also the sensitive one: Enforce sanctions against employers who hire illegal aliens (and that requires a secure ID). This would take some pressure off the border with Mexico.

Clarence Page, Chicago Tribune: Hillary Clinton appeared at some points to be debating herself. The most glaring example came when she tried to explain why she once said that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses "makes a lot of sense."

After answering the question once, she raised her hand later to add that "I did not say that it should be done, but I certainly recognize why Gov. Spitzer is trying to do it."

That prompted John Edwards to pounce: "Sen. Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes." Barack Obama, too, was "confused on Sen. Clinton's answer" and "can't tell whether she was for it or against it."

Democrats tend to favor licenses for illegals to encourage safer driving, among other worthwhile reasons. But Clinton apparently has no desire to further rile up the right-wingers, for whom any convenience for illegals is seen as capitulation to lawbreakers.

Kathleen Parker, Orlando Sentinel: As long as we offer jobs, medical treatment, driver's licenses and in-state tuition to those who come here illegally, why would any right-thinking, would-be immigrant take a number and wait his turn? Why not just throw in the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and free tequila while we're at it?

On the one hand, we argue that employers should be penalized for hiring illegal immigrants; on the other, we insist that the immigrants need driver's licenses because employers demand them. I'm beginning to see how Hillary Clinton got so tangled up. You cannot argue rationally in defense of the irrational.

John Fund, OpinionJournal.com: It stops just short of being an engraved invitation for people to commit voter fraud. (Federal law) required all states to offer voter registration to anyone getting a driver's license. One simply fills out a form and checks a box stating he is a citizen; he is then registered and in most states does not have to show any ID to vote. But no one checks if the person registering to vote is indeed a citizen.

The potential for fraud is not trivial, as federal privacy laws prevent cross-checking voter registration rolls with immigration records. Nevertheless, a 1997 congressional investigation found that "4,023 illegal voters possibly cast ballots in (a) disputed House election" in California. After 9/11, the Justice Department found that eight of the 19 hijackers were registered to vote.

My 19 y/o son had to go to the dmv a total of (I'm not kidding) 5 times before he could get his driver's license. First time, a birth certificate and social security card was not enough. Every time we went back, we were told we needed another form of "legal presence". Needless to say, I was hopping mad. But what makes me madder is that they are going to give licences to illegals, no questions asked, and my son had to go to the dmv FIVE times to prove who he was. Something is very wrong here.

    Right on!
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Hillary's statement concernering Eliot "illegals on wheels" Spitzer tatooed a well-deserved bullseye on her back. Good

Has she ever given a straight forward answer to anything?

"It's a sad state of affairs, with 20 to 30 million illegal aliens in this county, when the arrest of 11 of them makes news."
"Distrust and caution are the parents of security."

We did have a list. He took his school transcript, but they wouldn't accept it because it wasn't signed. So, he goes back to the school and has it signed. Then they tell him it has to be notarized. He gets that done. Then they tell him he needs ANOTHER form of proof. In the end, it turned out the transcript could be used for both requirements. The guy at the DMV didn't even know that.

Moving from California to Nevada......you had to prove how your name changed from original SS # name to your name now....like I had a NOTORIZED copy of my Marriage Licence from New York from the 60's.. (I probably burned it years ago.)they would not just accept your Ca drivers license that was valid since the late 60's...got around it by having a valid passport....my girlfriend was married 4 times and was told to show every marriage license/divorce decree.....she got a passport....

I have to tell you I wasn't sure you were telling the truth about the social security card, but that's what the VA DMV says -

    link - http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/pdf/dmv141.pdf

    Proof of Social Security Number

If you are applying for any driver’s license or learner’s permit you will
be required to provide one proof of your social security number (SSN)
(if you have been issued one) from the list below. Your document
must display all nine-digits. Anyone applying for a CDL or CDL
instruction permit must provide a SSN. If you are applying for an ID
card, you do not have to provide a SSN.

DMV will verify all social security numbers with the Social Security
    Administration (SSA).
If the information (name, date of birth, and SSN) you present does not match the information on file at the SSA, DMV
will not issue you a driver’s license, learner’s permit,CDL, or CDL
    instruction permit.

DMV will assign you a customer number which will display on your
driver’s license, learner’s permit, CDL, or CDL instruction permit or ID
card. If you wish to change your DMV-assigned number in the future,
you may be required to present documentation from law
enforcement or the courts indicating that you may be a victim of
    identity theft.

    • Social security card (Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers are
    not accepted).
    • U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax reporting W-2 form or 1099 form.
    • Payroll check stub issued by employer.
    • Unexpired U.S. Active Duty/Retiree/Reservist Military ID Card (DD-
2 or Common Access Card). (ID cards of military dependents are
    not accepted)
    • Annual Social Security Statement.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I'm glad to see they VERIFY each SSN !

Good luck to you, with yr future visits to the DMV.
