RALEIGH, N.C. - Legislation allowing North Carolina residents living illegally in the U.S. to obtain driver's permits is still intact at the General Assembly, although its future is uncertain.
A majority voting in the House Finance Committee on Tuesday rejected a proposed amendment that would have deleted the provision related to issuing a one-year "restricted" permit.
But the committee didn't vote on the whole bill, which also contains tougher penalties for people selling bogus driver's licenses and identification cards. No date was set to reconsider the measure, which passed another committee in April.
Bill sponsor Rep. Harry Warren of Salisbury says the restricted permit is better than motorists driving with neither genuine identification nor insurance, which the bill requires. Critics argue the permits would give government legitimacy to people in the state unlawfully.
"If the bill were about public safety, only the enforcement measures would remain in the bill," said Ron Woodard, director of NC Listen, a legal immigration group.
He said that HB 328 would "reward people illegally in our nation with a state-issued legal driving permit" and "help illegal aliens legally drive to a job that belongs to an unemployed citizen."
Eleven of the country's 50 states allow those in the country illegally to legally drive but none of those surround North Carolina.
Woodard said that the bill would encourage those illegally in those surrounding states to move to North Carolina.
During a committee meeting on the topic, Rep. Warren disagreed with that point of view.
“Driver's licenses don't motivate immigration,” Warren said. “Economics do. People don't sneak into the United States to get a driver's license, and they don't go to Arizona or to Florida to get driver's licenses. They go there to work. There's nothing wrong with issuing a permit."
Woodard said that the last time North Carolina gave driving privileges, illegal immigrants flooded the state. "Most illegals will gladly come forward to acquire a driver's permit and will simply flee our state if they get in trouble," Woodard said, noting that many use multiple IDs and aliases.

Yes there is something wrong with issuing a permit, because if you issue a permit, then you know they're in the state illegally and should be arrested and deported, not allowed to use your stupid permit to drive to a job they stole from an American. When you put your so-called "public safety" above the economics of American workers and your priority makes it easier and condoned by the state to steal American jobs, then you are betraying the fine citizens and legal workers who are entitled to those jobs and are in a nutshell licensing illegal aliens to steal jobs from North Carolinians, and use your permit to drive to work at jobs they aren't entitled to have.

First graders understand this issue better than at least some members of the NC General Assembly, and as a Republican, I'm embarrassed and ashamed of your pandering to illegal aliens who are supposed to be arrested and removed from our state, not licensed to drive in it.

    SHAME ON YOU!!
