NC: High Point Enterprise- Ban IAs from Colleges

OUR VIEW: Ban illegal immigrants from colleges

    HIGH POINT ENTERPRISE Newspaper

It was a good move earlier this month when the State Board of Community Colleges imposed a temporary ban on enrolling illegal immigrants in the community and technical college system, including Guilford Technical Community Collge.

It also was OK that the board ordered a study of the issue. However, let's hope said study does not take very long, does not cost very much and does not defy what rational thought says is the best solution to this matter.

And that is ... people who are not legal residents of North Carolina or the United States should not be admitted to the state's community and technical college system.

The fact that only a few hundred of the system's roughly 800,000 students - including three at Guilford Technical Community College - are illegals is not the issue. The fact that illegal immigrants admitted to community colleges have been paying out-of-state tuition rates is not the issue. The fact that many of the students came here as babies with their parents is not the issue.

The point here is that people who are in this state and this nation illegally - no matter what their race or ethnicity or their reason for being here - are not entitled to the same rights and benefits as those of us who are American citizens.

Yes, those illegal immigrants should be afforded the chance to get in line to become legal residents. But they should not be given rights and benefits of American citizens until they have properly earned them, and that includes the chance for admission to this state's community and technical colleges.

Why would you educate someone who cannot work legally anyway . What about aiding and abetting ? There are colleges in their home country that they can attend .
