Triangle Briefs:
ID theft means jail, deportation

From Staff Reports
A Cary man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail and deportation for identity theft, the FBI announced Friday.

Jose Diaz, 46, was indicted in March by a Raleigh jury, according to an FBI news release. The Social Security Administration had alleged that an illegal alien had stolen another man's identity and used his Social Security number to work, acquire credit cards and receive Social Security disability insurance from November 1997 to June 2005. The Social Security Administration determined that Diaz defrauded it of $19,000.

Diaz was sentenced Jan. 8 in Wilmington, the release said. His sentence also included one year of supervised release. And he was ordered to repay the Social Security Administration in full, as well as a $100 assessment fee to the court.
