North Carolina lawmakers are considering whether to delve further into the nation's immigration debate by making it more uncomfortable for illegal immigrants to live in the state.

A House committee is meeting to discuss how the state should respond to illegal immigration and recommend changes to colleagues next spring.

Earlier this year, the new Republican-led General Assembly approved a requirement for local governments and many employers to check the immigration status of new hires.

Some legislators and anti-illegal immigration advocates want to go further and point to laws in Arizona and Alabama. Some worry tough laws in other states will draw more illegal immigrants to North Carolina. Those laws are being challenged in court.

Immigrant advocates like Maudia Melendez say North Carolina lawmakers are playing political games.
