    NCLR will be answering critics!

    http://www.nclr.org/content/news/detail/42857/

NCLR RELEASES “THE TRUTH ABOUT NCLR. NCLR ANSWERS CRITIC NORWOOD” RESPONSE

Washington, DC – The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., today released an “open letter to the public” responding to a set of allegations reiterated last month by Congressman Charlie Norwood (R-GA) about NCLR’s work, beliefs, and policy positions.

“We have made every effort to respond directly to Congressman Norwood to no avail, leading us to suspect that he is not that interested in hearing what the facts are. We believe our track record as a respected American institution helping to open the door to the American Dream for millions of Latinos speaks for itself,” stated Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO.

“That being said, we cannot let these false, unwarranted, and malicious attacks on our organization go unanswered, so we are using this as an opportunity to set the record straight about who we are and what we stand for,” concluded Murguía.

The full response is posted and available for download on the NCLR website, www.nclr.org. Below is the text of the response’s cover letter:

Those familiar with the work of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) know that we are the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., that we proudly represent nearly 300 Affiliates – community-based organizations providing a range of essential services to millions of Latinos and others in need – and that we are an American institution committed to strengthening this nation by promoting the advancement of Latino families.

We are also among the most recognized organizations in the nonprofit sector. Our work in the health arena has been honored by the Surgeon General of the United States and by numerous professional organizations. Both our former President/CEO and the current Chair of our Board of Directors have earned the prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award by the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and The Nonprofit Times has recognized our current leadership with its coveted “Power and Influence Top 50” award, honoring the top 50 leaders shaping the nonprofit world.

We recognize that some people might be confused about our organization’s name, our mission, and our work. Much of this is understandable. Compared to some of our venerable counterparts in the civil rights and advocacy community, we are a relatively young institution, representing Latinos, an historically disadvantaged and oft-misunderstood ethnic minority. We have a Spanish term in our name, “La Raza,” (meaning “the people” or “community”) which is easily mistranslated. Furthermore, we are engaged in some of the most controversial issues of our time, which we believe is essential if we are to stay true to our mission.

As an advocacy organization engaged in the public arena, we know that some will disagree with our views. As Americans committed to basic civil rights and civil liberties, we respect anyone’s right to do so.

But we are also convinced that some critics are willfully distorting the facts and deliberately mischaracterizing our organization and our work. Recently, we have been the subject of a number of ad hominem attacks that we believe cross the line of civility in public discourse.

At times, we have ignored these attacks, preferring to invest our precious time and resources in our work, believing that the quality of the work speaks for itself. At other times, we have responded in a civil fashion, through private correspondence or by requesting a meeting with a critic so we can discuss our differences. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to do this in every case, especially when our private requests for civil discussion are responded to with further unfounded attacks, often echoed in the media as if they were accurate, which they are not.

So, today we are engaging in an unprecedented step to make sure that the record is as clear and accessible as we can possibly make it. In response to a series of articles and press releases by Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-GA) disparaging our organization, we are publishing a full accounting of and links to his charges (many of which have been echoed in some media outlets), our responses, and related materials. We do so in the interest of full disclosure and in the spirit of complete transparency. We trust that, after reviewing all of these materials, readers will come to their own conclusions about the merits of these and similar attacks which we have been subjected to.

I think this is what the NCLR is whining about. Sorry that it's older news.

Norwood letter blasting immigrants may break House rules

    Brian Beutler
    Published: Friday September 22, 2006

In what may have been a violation of ethics rules, Congressman Charlie Norwood (R-GA) issued a press release yesterday slamming pro-immigrant groups and their supporters in Congress, RAW STORY has learned.

In a letter dated yesterday and on official House of Representatives letterhead, Norwood went so far as to call on voters to elect out of office any member of congress who failed to support a bill that would empower different law enforcement groups to work in concert to arrest and deport illegal immigrants.

But House Administration rules prohibit congressmen and senators from using their legislative offices to conduct electioneering activities.

Members of the House Administration committee did not immediately respond to an email and call for comment.

The National Council of La Raza, (NCLR) the main group targeted by Norwood, issued a rejoinder demanding an apology and requesting that he reimburse the U.S. Treasury for any misused funds.

In yet another response today, Norwood issued a conditional apology, contingent upon a series of demands to NCLR--including renouncing any claims that any current U.S. territory rightfully belongs to Mexico.

Norwood's two letters on the matter are reprinted below:

U.S. Representative Charlie Norwood, Ninth District, Georgia For immediate release: September 20, 2006 La Raza Mounts Drive to Suppress US Law Enforcement Key Reformer Calls for American Voters to Fight Blitzkrieg by Radical Group

(Washington, DC) - The ability of state and local police to fight criminal illegal aliens will be undermined by legal intimidation if a mass lobbying campaign by the radical National Council of La Raza (NCLR) succeeds in blocking passage of a critical House immigration reform bill this week, according to U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-GA), the leading proponent of supporting local officers in the fight against criminal aliens.

The House is scheduled to vote on HR 6089 containing key elements of Norwood's CLEAR Act, which would provide funding, training, and resources for state and local law enforcement agencies who voluntarily assist federal officers in apprehension and detention of criminal illegal aliens while in the course of their routine duties such as traffic stops and drug arrests.

NCLR, a pro-illegal immigration lobbying organization that supports racist groups calling for the secession of the western United States as a Hispanic-only homeland, has mounted an all-out campaign to prevent state and local police from voluntarily aiding critically undermanned federal authorities. Norwood says the bill does not target the majority of the 12-20 million illegal immigrants in America, but only serious felons.

"There are the equivalent of 3,000 federal agents trying to arrest 500,000 criminal illegal aliens, of whom 80,000 are violent felons," says Norwood. "That's impossible, and that's why we keep seeing convicted child molesters, rapists, and murderers turned back on our streets instead of being deported. HR 6089 simply reinforces the inherent authority of our 700,000 state and local police to help in this fight, and that's why this anti-American group is mounting a blitzkrieg against it - it evens the odds against these scumbags for the first time in decades."

Norwood called for all law-abiding American citizens to call their House member and demand a yes vote for the bill. "For those who haven't figured it out yet, the entire illegal immigration crisis we suffer is due 100% from our failure to enforce existing law. The other side - La Raza, MEChA, Aztlan - knows this very well, and knows that the continued suppression of US law enforcement efforts is essential to permanently destroying our borders."

"If Americans don't wake up now, they'll wake up one day soon to find their nation has been stolen by La Raza and pals," says Norwood. "Call your House member today to vote YES on HR 6089 - or throw them out of office November 7."

    NEWS RELEASE

U.S. Representative Charlie Norwood, Ninth District, Georgia

For immediate release: September 20, 2006

Norwood Offers Conditioned Apology to La Raza

(Washington, DC) - U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood today offered to issue an apology to the National Council of La Raza for statements made in an earlier news release which accused the organization of association with and support of anti-American and racist groups, on the condition NCLR would agree in writing to the following seven points, and publish the seven points with unequivocal NCLR endorsement of the same prominently on their website:

Denounce and sever all ties with MEChA and any other organizations with which they are now or have ever been associated or funded which held to the racist doctrines published by MEChA.

Denounce the statement "For La Raza to do. Fuera de La Raza nada," as repugnant, racist, and totally incompatible with American society or citizenship.

Repudiate all claims that any current American territory rightfully belongs to Mexico.

Acknowledge the right of all Americans to live wherever they choose in the United States, and that no section or region of this country should be segregated by race or ethnic heritage.

Commit to sponsorship of nationwide educational programs to combat racism and anti-Semitism in the Hispanic community.

Seek neutral, third party supervision to ensure that all community and individual assistance programs offered by La Raza and groups supported by La Raza are accessible to all Americans, regardless of race or ethnicity, and that participation in those programs is fully compliant with Equal Opportunity laws.

Acknowledge the internationally recognized borders of the United States, the right of the citizens of the United States to determine immigration policy through the democratic process, and the right of the United States to undertake any and all necessary steps including military action to effectively enforce immigration law and defend its borders against unauthorized entry.

Norwood further requested that NCLR immediately release records of how much of the organization's funds are being used to lobby Congress for specific legislative initiatives. NCLR mounted a nationwide lobbying drive this week in a failed attempt to block immigration reform in the House of Representatives. The organization is registered with the IRS as a 501c3 non-profit charity, which is strictly limited by IRS rules in their ability to lobby Congress or other legislative bodies, or conduct get-out-the-vote campaigns.

There is no misunderstanding. Why would you, LaRaza, think that you are misunderstood when your spokes people have made your position known in public? When your written documentation clearly states that you are a racist organization? Are you under the impression that your new, soft spoken, female president will help to cover up the truth about you?

Why would you pretend to be a "civil rights" organization when you are focused on BREAKING THE RULE OF LAW? When you DO Break the Rule of Law? When you carry the mexican flag above Old Glory? That speaks volumes. When you care not a wit about the health and well being of this nation you pretend to love...called the USA. When you encourage the people of mexico to sacrifice their children by dragging them thru the deserts with unscrupulous, murdering people or to simply leave them and BREAK UP THE FAMILY?

Your organization has manipulated and taken advantage of the poor, uneducated people of mexico for your own self interests. You don't even give a tinker's damn about your own bretheren.

    Patooey.......Corrupt Racists, one and all.

Rep. Charlie Norwood is absolutely correct!!

I read the entire NCLR response to Norwood point by point. They claim that Raza does not mean race because there are several ethnic mixes in the Latino population they support.

Thus they claim Raza means people or community. Specifically the Hispanic people or community.

Since Hispanics are not termed by nationality or region and since they are not a political group, Hispanic is most closely tied with ethnicity or race.

Therefore, they are the National Council of the Hispanic People or the National Council of the Hispanic Community.

Equivalent statements. National Council of Whites. National Council of the white community. National Council of the White People.

What a bunch of horse hooey. Answer these simple questions:

Do they support the civil rights of whites?

Do they support the civil rights of blacks?

Do they support the civil rights of arabs?

Do they support the civil rights of asians?

Seems like they only support one race of people to me.

BTW go to google and translate La Raza from spanish to english and it says The Race. Nice try on revisionism you retards.

So now the motto is "Everything for the Hispanic Community-for other communities nothing"

Why don't I feel better about that?

Norwood called The Race out so now they are doing damage control. Oh please! Make me laugh!

...American institution helping to open the door to the American Dream for millions of Latinos speaks for itself,” stated Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO.
They can't even get two sentences out without showing their true colors.

"American and Latinos" Can't have it both ways. Still pushing the American Dream Act - Tuition for illegal aliens. Yea, that is really bluring the line! It should be called Pell Grants for Illegal Alien Act or Adjust Illegal Alien Status to Get Backdoor Amnesty Act.

Guess someone wanted them voting this election but it didn't get through the Republican Controlled House this term.

    109th U.S. Congress (2005-2006)

    H.R. 5131: American Dream Act
To amend the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to permit States to determine State residency for higher education purposes and to authorize the cancellation of removal and adjustment of status of certain alien students who are long-term United States residents and who entered the United States as children, and for other purposes.

The civil rights acts of the 1960s should be sufficient to protect
    legal Americans of all races.

Why can't people see the irony of what she is saying? In a
country of laws which protect your civil rights, NCLR is saying
to ignore our laws and calling us racists for trying to enforce
    the laws!!! It's positively Orwellian!

They will never denounce Mecha since that is the training
    ground for NCLR.

I just cannot believe our attorney general is a member of
    these racists!?!?!
