Catholic Bishops Urge Care with Immigrants

Nebraska's three Catholic bishops are urging state and local lawmakers to act carefully on illegal immigration or risk causing a backlash of discrimination and intimidation.

In a joint statement, the bishops from Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island say state efforts aimed at unscrupulous employers are appropriate.

But the bishops say the state has limited authority to address illegal immigration and cities have an even narrower scope.

They call local efforts to require people to show they are legal residents in order to get housing "fundamentally unjust, vindictive and harmful."

The Fremont City Council voted down such a proposal in July, but an effort is under way to put it on a city ballot.

Is that a threat, since undoubtedly they will get all their illegal alien flock to protest and intimidate? Isn't there any way to remove tax-exempt status from a filthy rich organization which refuses to stay out of politics while they suck money out of the poorest who turn to them for comfort.

    Bishops Speak Out on Immigration

    Posted: Feb 16, 2009 05:59 PM CST

    Updated: Feb 16, 2009 05:59 PM CST

Tensions ran high as government agents raided the Swift packing plant in December 2006. They arrested illegal immigrants in a roundup that sent many underground.

The Most Rev. William J. Dendinger, Bishop of Grand Island said, "They felt they would be raided in their houses and felt there were names ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] had and they were going to hunt them down."

Bishop Dendinger said immigration policy has failed, so he's issued a rare joint statement with the bishops of Omaha and Lincoln. They say immigrants have become easy targets for people's anger.

"People come here with hopes of economic benefits, so it's not a healthy situation," he said.

Dendinger said they're addressing the issue is because they see it first hand at churches like St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island where immigrants come, knowing it's a safe place to get help.

He said, "They were coming to churches, seeking help from food to money."

Those opposed to illegal immigration have pushed for city, and state action. But the bishops warn that'll result in a backlash.

Dendinger said, "Trying to create their own laws really won't work, will just make it more complicated."

But what to do with the estimated 12 to 15 million illegal immigrants? The bishops call deporting them all too radical, but they say it wouldn't work to make them all citizens either.

The bishops say the church is a beacon of hope for immigrants, so they urge Congress to find the middle ground.

"We have to be able to moderate the entrance of these people, provide a way to document them and they have to know when their time is up," Bishop Dendinger said.

The bishops said they had to speak out. Their statement said immigrants have burdened local churches, because many don't have anywhere else to turn. So they urge comprehensive reform that'll give hope to those already here.

    Reporter's Notes by Steve White:
The document was co-signed by Archbishop Elden F. Curtiss of Omaha and Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz of Lincoln. Dendinger said it's been several years since they have put out a joint statement. He said a year's work went into the document, including hearings in several communities affected by immigration, like Grand Island and Lexington.

The bishops were critical of efforts in Fremont to enact their own immigration laws. They wrote, "We have a greater concern, that these actions could become a basis for profiling or other forms of intimidation or discrimination. However, we agree that efforts to halt the wrongful conduct of unscrupulous employers could be a realm in which state law responses would be valid and appropriate."

Bishops’ statement angers some on illegal immigration
    By Don Bowen/Fremont Tribune
    Wednesday, Feb 18, 2009 - 10:55:42 am CST

Two Fremont residents who have been at the head of an ongoing illegal immigration debate said a recent joint statement from the three Catholic bishops in Nebraska crosses the line.

The statement released earlier this week discouraged the Nebraska Unicameral and the governments of local communities, like Fremont, from passing their own immigration laws.

Former Fremont City Council member Bob Warner and Carl Schaffner, a potential candidate for mayor in 2008, said government activities are not the business of the church.

It is a sad thing to see that the Catholic Church is no longer in the forefront of Patriotism, even though many are still. However, the Church has been invaded by many who believe in revolutionary theology. That this is truly dangerous to our Republic is all the more sad. Catholic clergy just so happen to be more visible in this regard. In my neck of the woods I know many friends who are just as disheartened about their Protestant Churches following the same line. I would encourage those who belong to Protestant Churches for instance to be on guard for similar misbehavior from their Pastors. In many cases a national Synod is held where such Illegal Alien issues are forced upon all of the churches chapters.

As for the Catholic Church, all those Americans who happen to be Catholic have a sacred duty to insist that the Clergy participate in issues of the spirit. God knows that even if they spend an eternity making up for the wrongs of the past, they will never, never get ahead of the curve where one innocent was deceived by an evil clergyman.
