KEARNEY — A man who had been living in Kearney has been convicted of sexually assaulting a girl in rural Buffalo County.

Through an interpreter, Luis Alfredo Rocha-Acevedo, 19, pleaded no contest last week in Buffalo County District Court to one count of felony attempted first-degree sexual assault. Acevedo subjected a girl older than 12 but younger than 16 to sexual penetration in April.

The incident happened in rural Buffalo County south of Gibbon.

Judge John Icenogle ordered the state probation department to conduct a presentence investigation on Acevedo. Those findings will be returned to Icenogle for determining an appropriate sentence.

Acevedo faces one to 50 years in prison. He is being held at the Buffalo County Jail on a 10 percent of a $100,000 bond.

He is also being held for Immigration Customs Enforcement officials.
