Man sentenced to 20 to 25 years for assault

LEXINGTON - A 38-year old citizen of the Dominican Republic was sentenced to 20 to 25 years in the Nebraska Correctional system in Dawson County District Court Friday.

Quinton Nicolas Dia was charged with first degree assault, a C felony, from an incident in Gothenburg April 11, 2010. A Class II felony calls for a prison sentence of one to 50 years.

According to the Gothenburg Police Department, Dia became involved in an altercation with the daughter of his girlfriend. The daughter threatened Dia with a knife, which he seized from her, then inflicted multiple stab wounds on the daughter.

Following the incident, she was in critical condition.

Dia was given a psychological examination at the Lincoln Regional Center, then returned to Dawson County.

The federal immigration office in Omaha revealed that Dia was in the country illegally. He will be returned to the Dominican Republic when he completes his prison term.
