Border Patrol agents, helped by a drug-sniffing dog, found nearly a ton of marijauana hidden in a semi tractor-trailer passing through the checkpoint at Sonoita along the Arizona-Mexico border.

The truck was stopped at the checkpoint on State Route 82 on Tuesday.

While in the inspection area, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to the possibility of contraband hidden in the trailer. The truck was referred to a secondary inspection area. Agents discovered several bundles of marijuana covered in laundry soap and concealed among cardboard bails. The bundles weighed about 1,780 pounds. The value of the marijuana was estimated at $712,000.

The driver, Osmin Antonio Alas, 46, a naturalized U.S. citizen from El Salvador, was turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Border Patrol has seized more than 608,000 pounds of marijuana along the Arizona-Mexico border since Oct. 1, 2007.
