LA VISTA — Nebraska Republicans have voted for a resolution to oppose in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

The Legislature passed a bill in 2006 to allow illegal immigrants who graduated from high school in Nebraska and who are pursuing or promise to pursue legal status to pay in-state tuition at the state’s colleges and universities. They have to have lived in the state at least three years.

Under the old law, students with illegal status had to pay out-of-state tuition.

The resolution approved Saturday at the state party’s convention calls on the Legislature to rescind the granting of the benefits for non-citizens.

Gov. Dave Heineman tried to push a bill to do so this year, but it was killed by a key legislative committee. He said Saturday that illegal residents shouldn’t receive state and local benefits.
