Immigration issue continues to simmer in Fremont

Editor’s note: Today we begin a series of stories dealing with Fremont’s illegal immigration ordinance and issues as we near the one-year anniversary of the city council’s vote on a proposed law.

It’s been almost a year since hundreds of people packed the Fremont High School auditorium to deliver and hear comments about a proposed ordinance dealing with illegal immigration.

For a few months last summer, immigration was the issue in Fremont. It continues to simmer as Fremont officials move forward with an appeal of a district court ruling on a petition effort to allow citizens to vote on the ordinance.

On July 29, 2008, the Fremont City Council split 4-4 on a proposed ordinance that would have prohibited the harboring and hiring of and renting to illegal immigrants. The tie vote killed the proposal, but Mayor “Skipâ€
