In-state tuition for illegal immigrants?

Supporters say it would help economy, foes say it’s bad idea

Despite a similar bill being killed in 2009 Ń and Republicans now having more power in the Legislature Ń a freshman lawmaker is hopeful she can help pass a controversial measure to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.

Sen. Angela Giron, D-Pueblo, is planning to introduce the in-state tuition bill later this month along with Sen. Michael Johnston, D-Denver. A 2009 attempt by Sen. Chris Romer, D-Denver, to pass a bill granting in-state tuition to illegal immigrants met fierce opposition from Republicans and was killed.

However, Giron is optimistic that lawmakers will see the positive economic impact granting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants would allegedly have for the state. She believes it makes sense to give the “young talentâ€
