Schumer says border more secure; locals say more needed

Schumer says border more secure; locals say more needed

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of people arrested as they tried to cross U.S. borders illegally has gone down 27%, according to federal officials.
At a Wednesday hearing on border security, Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer cited reports from the Customs and Border Protection officials saying that most of the decrease has been in the number of people taken into custody as they tried to illegally enter the United States along the border with Mexico.

Schumer said that the number of people captured between Oct. 1, 2008 and May 15 this year were down 27% from the same period the previous year. Along the U.S-Canada border, the number was down 13%.

The New York senator said the lower demand for labor in the U.S. and stepped-up border enforcement measures are behind the decrease.

"The border is far more secure than it's ever been," Schumer said.

Hundreds of federal agents, along with high-tech surveillance gear and drug-sniffing dogs, are being deployed to the Southwest as part of an Obama administration plan to crack down on border violence and work with Mexican authorities against drug cartels.

A mayor from the U.S.-Mexico border told lawmakers even more money is needed for border officers and dogs to help curb cross-border trafficking of drugs, guns and humans.

Chad Foster, mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, said President Obama's budget request for 2010 doesn't have enough money for those key border needs.

Foster said the legal entry ports are the biggest vulnerability, now that the United States has gotten better control of remote stretches of border. He said an extra 1,600 Customs and Border Protection officers and 400 canine units are needed along the nation's southwestern border.

The mayor and other border officials, along with federal immigrations and border officials, testified before the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, refugees and border security.

It says the number of people arrested was down 27%, that could well mean 27% more made it through.

25 undocumented immigrants rescued in S. Arizona desert
    Reported by: Rebecca Thomas

    Last Update: 11:55 am

U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Tucson Sector were kept busy this past weekend as they rescued a total of 25 undocumented immigrants from the southern Arizona desert.

The rescues happened in both the Tucson and Casa Grande areas.

The Casa Grande Police Department also received several 911 calls reporting a group of people who were lost in the desert. Officials were able to pinpoint the locations of the callers.

Agents discovered several groups of undocumented immigrants near the areas of Big Fields, Stanfield, and Highway 86 south of Tucson. They were given water and transported to the Casa Grande Border Patrol Station for processing.

Agents say, in most of these cases, the immigrants were left behind by human smugglers when they couldn't keep up with a larger group.

Since last October, Tucson Sector agents have rescued more than 460 people.

Contacting Schumer is a waste of time. The many is already fully committed to his position publicly. Sure, send things if it makes you feel better but your attempts to persuade lawmakers would be better placed in other offices.

Remember, Sen. Schumer is now the U.S. Senate point man for amnesty. Sen. Kennedy (D-MA) was forced to pass the torch on to Schumer because of his brain tumor. A 27% reduction in arrest doesn't even mean the border is 27% more secure.

Furthermore, illegal alien apprehensions in the interior has been reduced, probably up to a minimum of 27% since January (maybe a lot more). The Obama administration seems to have little interest in illegals unless their convicted criminals. The priority supposedly has now been shifted to employers of illegals and convicted criminal illegals. Now tell me, how many employers have you heard of that have been arrested since January? How many business and/or plant raids? Heck, recently I've heard of more employers being released than appreheneded.

My point is, the reductions in border apprehensions could simply be the result of a shift in border enforcement priorities, nothing more.

I'm with mountaindog, not buying it.

My sentiments EXACTLY! I still do though, Schumer-Gillenbrand and Nydia Velazqez. Then there's Mayor Bloomberg so I actually have NO VOICE in my government.

I do it because we have let the Democrats off way to easy, Schumer is the head of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, they need to know their are alot of us out here that are not going for amnesty, and he needs to know we are not falling for his lie's that the border is secure, when its not!

Keep hounding them "Ratbstard" never give up!!! Schumer is an idiot and not my Senator but he still needs contact with the public and not just the pro illegal activist groups.
