NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Tuesday marks the deadline for a New Jersey Muslim leader to answer an appeal of an immigration ruling that stopped him from being deported.

Lawyers for Mohammad Qatanani say they plan to file their rebuttal with the Board of Immigration Appeals.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has asked the board to review the ruling that allows the Paterson mosque leader to remain in the U.S.

Qatanani was accused by immigration officials of having terrorist ties. His immigration fight garnered national attention after several high-ranking law enforcement officials testified on his behalf.

An immigration judge ruled in September that Qatanani and his family could remain in the U.S., calling the government's case "patently incomplete."
