PASSAIC — A woman who gave birth to an infant girl less than two weeks ago is facing child endangerment charges and detainment in a federal immigration facility after she allegedly went on a drinking binge and left her newborn at a friend's apartment for hours, police said Wednesday.

Imelda Pablo, 31, of Sherman Street and a suspected illegal immigrant from Mexico, was arrested Tuesday night after a Parker Avenue resident called 911 to report that the baby had been left for nearly a day in his apartment, said Detective Andy White of the Passaic Police Department.

On Monday night, Pablo and a male companion allegedly brought her baby to the 210 Parker Ave. apartment of a friend they knew "from the streets," White said. They began drinking heavily until, at some point in the night, Pablo and her companion left and did not return.

The unidentified resident of the apartment woke up Tuesday and realized the infant was still there, White said. The resident did not know the mother's telephone number or where she lived. While waiting for her to return, he bought food and fed the child formula, White said.

When the mother did not show up by about 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Parker Avenue man called 911. Emergency medical technicians brought the baby to a hospital where she was treated for mild dehydration, White said. The infant is now in the custody of the Division of Youth and Family Services, he said.

Pablo was being held Wednesday in the Passaic municipal lockup on $35,000 bail with a 10 percent option. White said the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement had placed a retainer on Pablo because of questions about her immigration status.
