RI gov noncommittal on immigration panel report

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR'-ee) is not saying if he supports a suggestion to track the costs of his crackdown on illegal immigrants in Rhode Island.

The accounting was one suggestion included in a report from an advisory panel monitoring an executive order that Carcieri signed last year targeting illegal immigrants. The panel met for the last time Tuesday.

Carcieri said he believed the costs of the crackdown would be minimal for the state.

After the meeting, Carcieri said he will examine other recommendations in the report before making final decisions.

His executive order forces State Police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation. It also requires that the executive branch and companies doing business with the state electronically check the immigration status of new hires.
