Unlicensed illegal immigrant charged with auto crash death of Williamstown woman in Clayton

CLAYTON -- A 52-year-old Williamstown woman was killed this morning when the car she was driving was hit by an SUV driven by an illegal immigrant without a license.

Mary P. Rogers, of the 1600 block of Hessian Drive, died at the scene of the 6:55 a.m. crash at Fries Mill Road and Deschler Boulevard.

Rubiel Sanchez-Ramirez, 25, of North Laurel Avenue in Bridgeton, was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer reportedly owned by his fiancee when he hit the 2002 Nissan Altima Rogers was driving, authorities said.

The Explorer was traveling north on Fries Mill Road and hit the Nissan on the driver's side as it turned onto Fries Mill from Deschler Boulevard, said authorities.

The Nissan was forced off the road into the treeline of a residential property. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sanchez-Ramirez suffered minor injuries and was taken to Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Washington Township for treatment, then released.

Sanchez-Ramirez has been charged with causing death in a motor vehicle crash while driving without a license, a third-degree criminal offense. He was also issued several summonses for motor vehicle violations, including careless driving and driving without a license. Bail for Sanchez-Ramirez was set at $100,000 by Superior Court Judge Walter L. Marshall Jr. The suspect was to be placed in the Gloucester County Jail, Woodbury.

In addition, a detainer was placed on Sanchez-Ramirez by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency because of his status as an illegal alien from Mexico.

An autopsy on Rogers is pending.

An investigation of factors that may have contributed to the crash is being conducted by the New Jersey State Police, Clayton Police Department and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. Assistance was provided by ICE agents, the Monroe and Franklin police departments and the Cecil Fire Co., whose personnel helped with traffic control for the four-hour period Fries Mill Road was closed after the crash.
