Man, 25, charged with drug possession

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP: A 25-year-old Mexican national faces drug and other charges after a foot chase Friday afternoon in the area of Routes 9 and 524, according to township police.

Rubin Ruiz, whose last known local address was Broad Street in Freehold, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession with the intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and hindering apprehension, according to Lt. Robert Brightman.

The incident began about 1 p.m. when Police Officer William Gallo stopped a car with five occupants on Halls Mill Road near Route 524, Brightman said.

When police approached Ruiz, a front-seat passenger, for not wearing a seat-belt, he said he had no identification on him, Brightman said. So police removed him from the car, Brightman said.

"Once out of the vehicle, he (Ruiz) became highly uncooperative," said Brightman, adding Ruiz turned and fled on foot.

Gallo chased Ruiz to the rear of the nearby Adelphia Plaza shopping center at the corner of Routes 9 and 524 and arrested him, Brightman said. Police found Ruiz to have more than an ounce of cocaine in his possession, Brightman said.

The car's 17-year-old driver, who received motor-vehicle summonses, and the other three occupants were not detained, Brightman said.
