Sen. Bill Nelson has called for authorities to halt the deportation of a Miami man whose immigration story has inspired protests and riled up immigration activists throughout South Florida.
In a letter last week addressed to a top federal immigration official, Nelson praised Walter Lara, a 23-year-old who is to be deported July 6. He called him ''exactly the type of person'' a new immigration bill is ''trying to help.'' Lara's story ''vividly illustrates'' the need for Congress to pass the DREAM Act, Nelson, a Democrat, said.
The bill would grant certain immigrants who graduate from U.S. high schools conditional permanent residency.
Lara received top scores in high school and college. He moved to Miami from Argentina when he was three. After graduating from Miami-Dade Honors College in 2007 he became a computer technician.
Both Florida senators -- Nelson and Republican Sen. Mel Martinez -- are co-sponsoring the bill along with about 25 others. Similar legislation in the House is supported by several South Florida lawmakers.
On June 23, more than 40 students and educators rallied against Lara's deportation at the College.
The protest was part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the DREAM Act, which Congress failed to pass in 2007. President Obama has publicly supported the bill, which was reintroduced in March. Lara was arrested by immigration authorities in February while installing satellite dishes for DirecTV.
Nelson called for Homeland Security Department officials, who enforce the nation's immigration laws, to act before July 6.
Lara ''has earned the chance to live and work here and call America home,'' Nelson wrote.Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!

Bunch of BS, Lara at age 18 could have voluntarily returned to Argentina and come back a year later as a legal college student. Others have done exactly that. He doesn't need the DREAM Act.

Why, if the illegal children have been here thru high school should they get tuition discounts? Why can't they pay what we pay? I dont' understand the reasoning behind this idea. If they go on to college, why should they get a discount. Just because they are smart can't excuse the fact that they are illegal. They are not using the law they are using empathy. I thought justice was blind. Apparently not.

And, what about smart AMERICAN kids. Why don't they get a discount? A smart American kid will be displaced by a smart illegal alien. How fair is that. While I feel bad for the kid who has worked hard thru school and THEN be deported, it doesn't change the fact that he is illega. Justice can't judge on anything else but the facts.

An American Citizens has to wait one year if moving from one state to another. And must have proof of being a resident in the new state to get in-state tuition.
It is bad having undocumented students in public school but damages American Students worse from the 11th grade into college.

Everyone needs to understand what the non college route undocumented students are doing to the Class Ranking of American Students trying to get into American Colleges.
There needs to be a class action lawsuit against the public school systems for defrauding American Citizens out of College.
I firmly think the Dream Act is trying to do a cover up of the mess our government is in. The government is trying to make it legal the abuse to American Students with the Dream Act.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
