    20 inmates die in Mexican prison drug gang fight

    The Associated Press 11:26 a.m. March 4, 2009

    CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — Police say a fight between inmates at a prison in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez has left at least 20 prisoners dead.

    Chihuahua state police spokesman Carlos Gonzalez says a fight broke out between three different gangs at about 6 a.m. Wednesday at the state prison in the city across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas.

    About 200 anti-riot police and 50 soldiers regained control of the prison three hours later.

    Gonzalez says authorities are investigating why the rival gangs were in the same area in violation of policy.

    The more the gang members kill each other down there the fewer of them there are to come here and commit crimes.

    The more the gang members kill each other down there the fewer of them there are to come here and commit crimes.

    Right. And the negative side is that all of the gang members who didn't get killed might still come here and violate our laws.

    Army to take over Ciudad Juarez police

    CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Mexico's army will take over the local police force in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, where it helped quell a deadly prison riot yesterday in its widening war against drug gangs.

    Soldiers poured into the city this week to restore order after 250 people died in February in a feud between drug gangs, which spilled into the prison, leaving 20 dead.
