MEXICO CITY — Mexico has arrested two former immigration officials suspected of illegally giving visas to migrants bound for the U.S.

Prosecutors say the suspects worked checking documents for Mexican airlines. They allegedly boarded flights and handed out Mexican visas that let migrants travel to the northern border without being stopped.

The Attorney General's Office said Wednesday in a statement that the migrants were mostly from China and arranged from overseas to obtain the documents. The statement did not give further details.

The suspects were arrested Tuesday and charged with people smuggling.
