A Passaic County grand jury has indicted two local brothers on charges of kidnapping their sister who was taken from her borough home at knifepoint on Monday, Jan. 4, in a tale of terror police say was motivated by a brother’s desire to maintain control of his family.
"We’re happy with the outcome at this point," said Gyselle DaSilva, assistant prosecutor with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
She reported that both Victor Corona, 22, and Delfino Corona, 20, were indicted last Thursday in Paterson on second degree kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
Victor alone was indicted on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, specifically, a knife, she said.
The jury listened to testimony from the Corona brothers’ 24-year-old sister, who is the victim of the alleged crime, along with the Pompton Lakes Police, who investigated the case and arrested the brothers.
Now the case will get set for arraignment in May before the Hon. Marilyn C. Clark, the presiding judge in the Criminal Division of Superior Court.
While awaiting their court proceedings, both brothers remain incarcerated at the Passaic County Jail and are also subject to a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to their alleged illegal alien status. Originally, their bail was set at $750,000 each.
According to DaSilva, the detainer means that "after the county resolves the case, immigration could step in and deport them."
Unless deported, conviction means Delfino could get a maximum of 20 years in jail, while Victor stands to serve 30 years behind bars, she said.
Back in January, Pompton Lakes Police said that the kidnapping was motivated by an issue of respect. Both brothers are believed to be illegal aliens from Mexico, and in their culture, the oldest male is king of the family, said Lt. Steve Seifried.
When their sister refused to leave her home to meet with the brothers, he said Victor put the 4-inch blade of a kitchen knife to her back and forced her to ride to his Wanaque Avenue apartment where the knifepoint terror allegedly continued.
Originally she did not want to leave due to concern for her 5-month-old baby that she did not want to leave or take out into the cold with her.
Back at the Wanaque Avenue apartment, police said that Victor was insisting on respect and would stab the mattress with a knife within inches of where the sister sat in the Wanaque Avenue bedroom to punctuate his words.
Her ordeal lasted roughly an hour, according to borough police. No one was hurt and the sister managed to flee to safety. Pompton Lakes Police were summoned and the brothers were apprehended, one at the Wanaque Avenue apartment and the other in Kinnelon.
Police said a search warrant on a 2001 Chrysler van, which the brothers took to the victim’s home, revealed sufficient evidence to support the sister’s tale of terror.
