Sheriff Joe Arpaio urged Arizonans to temper their reactions to the new immigration law until they see how it's enforced.

Police officers and law enforcement "won't go around racial profiling and grabbing people because of the color of their skin," the Maricopa County sheriff said at a media conference Thursday. "Let's not judge everybody right now before the law has been enforced."

Sheriff Joe Arpaio also said his deputies consider many variables beyond race when deciding whether to inquire about a person's immigration status.

The press conference was heavily attended by media armed with questions about how deputies would enforce immigration law and what that could mean for other agencies.

"We don't stop cars without a violation of the law, first," Arpaio said.
