NM House sticks with bill to stop licensing illegal aliens

NM House sticks with bill to take stop licensing undocumented immigrants

SANTA FE - The House of Representatives tonight rejected a Senate measure that would allow undocumented immigrants to continue obtaining New Mexico driver's licenses.

The vote was 40-30. It kept alive Rep. Andy Nunez's bill to stop people from being licensed unless they have proof of immigration status. Those in the country illegally or without proper documents would not receive licenses under Nunez's bill.

Next, senators will be asked again whether they can accept Nunez's bill.

The two measures are miles apart.

The Senate bill would allow undocumented immigrants to continue receiving driver's licenses. They would have to establish residency in New Mexico for six months and be fingerprinted, stricter rules than now exist.

If the two bodies are stalemated, the existing system would remain. Under a 2003 law, undocumented immigrants living in New Mexico can obtain driver's licenses for up to eight years.
New Mexico is one of three states that allows undocumented immigrants to receive driver's licenses. The others are Utah and Washington.

Now this is some good news if we can get the NM Senate in line with the public and 47 other states on this.

House turns down Senate immigrant license bill

    By: The Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The House is refusing to go along with a Senate-passed measure allowing New Mexico to continue granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

The decision by the House on Tuesday likely means no agreement on licensing changes during the legislative session despite Republican Gov. Susana Martinez's push to stop the practice.

The House voted earlier this month to end licenses for illegal immigrants. However, the Senate gutted the House proposal last week, keeping the immigrant licensing system but establishing tougher penalties for fraudulently trying to obtain a driver's license.

The House voted 40-30 on Tuesday against the Senate-passed version, which would require immigrants to renew their licenses every two years and be fingerprinted when they apply for a license.

We need to put the pressure on them now and continue it until the senate there comes to their senses. They cannot be kept in the latino pockets. The senate needs to honor the will of the people.
