Liberal Police Department Reaches Out To Illegal Immigrants

In recent weeks, the Liberal Police Department has been made aware of several incidents that went un-reported because victims in the cases were afraid to come forward, because they were illegal immigrants.

The police department is now reaching out to let all citizens know that the department's main concern is to protect citizens from crime and not find out their resident status.

"We are there to assist them regardless of what their resident status is," said Chief Alan Sill of the Liberal Police Department.

While the police department assists Immigration and Customs Enforcement when asked, recent cases of immigration enforcement have dealt with people who had committed felony crimes, not those that are victims of crimes.

"We are concerned with those that are living here in Liberal, passing
through, or just visiting. We want to know about crime, so we can help them
and get their situation resolved," said Chief Sill.

Police departments have no deportation authority. Immigration enforcement is handled by federal agencies.
