No-match data program is aid, not apocalypse

No-match data program is aid, not apocalypse

President Bush’s proposal to enforce existing immigration and labor laws has drawn the ire of businesses in Texas and nationwide.

When the no-match enforcement proposal on Social Security information was first issued in August, Bill Hammond, president of the Texas Association of Business, painted a picture of an economic doomsday: “Meals in restaurants will go uncooked and unserved. Beds in hotel rooms will go unmade. Farms and ranches will lose the hands that help feed our people. The engines of economic growth will cool.â€

Honest businesses have been using no-match for years. It works. That is why they worked so hard to stop expansion of the program.

The SSA has been issuing No-Match letters for decades. Where was the outcry then? Ahhhh -- it's only because NOW IT HAS SOME TEETH. So everybody was fine theN when there were no real consequences -- because they knew they could ignore the letters and get away with it. But now that there are real penalties, they are freaking out. SO, TO SUM UP, ATTRITION WORKS!!
