"No Wall In Any Form": Govt Shutdown Odds Explode Amid Trump-Schumer Standoff

"No Wall In Any Form": Govt Shutdown Odds Explode Amid Trump-Schumer Standoff

"We should not let a temper tantrum threat push us to do something wrong"

With a potential government shutdown just days away, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) dug in on Sunday, telling Meet The Press that President Trump is "not going to get the wall in any form."

Last Tuesday Trump, Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) clashed over Trump's $5 billion demand for border wall funding in an awkwardly televised argument in the Oval Office, prompting Schumer to later declare on the Senate Floor: "I want to be crystal clear. There will be no additional appropriations to pay for the border wall. It’s done."

The New York Democrat echoed his comments on Meet The Press Sunday, telling host Chuck Todd that Trump doesn't have the votes in the House or the Senate - saying that the president is having a "temper tantrum" over the wall.

"They do not have the votes to pass the president’s proposal — $5 billion or whatever it is for the wall," said Pelosi at a recent news conference. "So … if nothing is going to change in that regard, I don’t know why we just don’t proceed to keep government open so that people can be home for the holidays."
Meanwhile, the odds of a shutdown spiked to 58% on PredictIt, nearly double what it was 24 hours ago.
Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-MI) thinks the odds are even higher. "The odds are 65/35 we're shutting down. I'm not optimistic we're going to see some kind of compromise on appropriations on Homeland Security," said Mitchell, the freshman representative for the Republican leadership team. "I don't see that they're going to get done bickering."
"Trump will get the blame, but he won’t care," added an unnamed GOP lawmaker quoted by The Hill. "And the base will love him for it."
Yesterday we reported that Republicans are growing frustrated with Trump's holdout over funding the wall, after the president shockingly declared that he would be "proud" to take credit for a shutdown if he doesn't get his wall.
"If we don't get what we want, one way or the other ... I will shut down the government. Absolutely," said Trump during an awkward argument broadcast live. "I am proud to shut down the government for border security."

With the two sides at an impasse, it appears that the partial shutdown is a foregone conclusion unless someone blinks.
"There is no discernable plan. None that’s been disclosed," said #2 Senate Republican John Cornyn of Texas. "Everybody’s looking to [Trump] for a signal about what he wants to do. So far, it’s not clear."
The last time the government shut down in January, the GOP-controlled House was able to pass a short-term spending solution until February 16 - only to be blocked by Schumer and Democratic Senators because it did not have provisions for immigrants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Partial Shutdown Looms: ‘The Democrat Party Has a Simple Choice’

'At stake is the question of whether or not the United States remains a sovereign country'

By Samuel Chamberlain | Monday, December 17, 2018

The Trump administration Sunday reaffirmed the president’s insistence that he would allow a partial shutdown of the federal government if Congress does not provide $5 billion to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, with senior adviser Stephen Miller calling it a “fundamental issue.”
“At stake is the question of whether or not the United States remains a sovereign country,” Miller told CBS News’ “Face The Nation.”
“The Democrat Party has a simple choice. They can either choose to fight for America’s working class or to promote illegal immigration. You can’t do both.”
When asked if the administration was willing to allow parts of the government to cease operation at midnight Friday if the wall is not funded, Miller answered: “If it comes to it, absolutely.”
On NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) insisted that President Trump “is not going to get the wall in any form.”
“President Trump should understand, there are not the votes for the wall in the House or the Senate,” Schumer said. “Even the House, which is a majority Republican, they don’t have the votes for his $5 billion wall plan … And we should not let a temper tantrum, threats, push us in the direction of doing something that everybody, even our Republican colleagues, know is wrong.”
Trump said last week he would be “proud” to have a shutdown to get Congress to approve a $5 billion down payment to fulfill his campaign promise to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Still, the president doesn’t have the votes from the Republican-controlled Congress to support funding for the wall at that level.
Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have proposed no more than $1.6 billion for border fencing upgrades and other security measures — but not a wall — as outlined in a bipartisan Senate bill. Democrats also offered to keep funding at its current level, $1.3 billion.
“[Republicans] should join us in one of these two proposals, which would get more than enough votes passed and avoid a shutdown,” Schumer said. “Then, if the president wants to debate the wall next year, he can. I don’t think he’ll get it. But he shouldn’t use innocent workers as hostage for his temper tantrum to sort of throw a bone to his base.”
    More from LifeZette
Both parties in Congress have suggested that Trump would need to make the next move to resolve the impasse. The House is taking an extended weekend break, returning Wednesday night. The Senate returns Monday after a three-day absence.
Trump neither accepted nor rejected the Democrats’ proposal as of Friday, according to the Democrats, telling them he would take a look. Trump would need Democratic votes either now or in the new year, for passage.
Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), told “Face The Nation” that Republicans remained hopeful they could come up with a proposal that would be acceptable to Trump and pass both chambers. He suggested that could take the form of a stopgap bill extending funding until January or a longer-term bill including money for border security.
Both parties in Congress have suggested that Trump would need to make the next move to resolve the impasse. The House is taking an extended weekend break, returning Wednesday night. The Senate returns Monday after a three-day absence.
“There are a lot of things you need to do with border security,” he said. “One is a physical barrier but also the technology, the manpower, the enforcement, all of those things, and our current laws are in some ways an incentive for people to come to this country illegally, and they go through great risk and possibly great harm.”
Appearing on ABC News’ “This Week,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) urged senators to revisit a bill she helped push earlier this year that would provide $2.5 billion for border security, including physical barriers as well as technology and border patrol agents.
“There’s absolutely no excuse to shut down government on this issue or any other issue,” said Collins, who added of her proposal: “I hope it would be good enough for the president … There’s a compromise and people will come to the table in good faith on both sides. We have to prevent a government shutdown.”

Do not back down this time Trump. We have been WAITING 2 years for that wall and it could have been completed by now!

Our military built the Alaska Highway in LESS THAN 10 MONTHS! They can build the wall, the fence, they can bulldoze the brush on the Rio Grande where they hide!

Put our Navy and Coast Guard on the Rio Grande.

10 mile buffer zone...if you are caught you are automatically booted back to Mexico!

The rest serve time in Federal Tent City on Federal Land with a panel of Federal Judges and deport them on the spot!

NO UAC'S. THEY ARE NOT OUR CHILDREN, THEY ARE MINOR'S AND FOREIGN RUNAWAYS! SEND THEM BACK WITHIN 48 HOURS!

END BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, NO HEALTHCARE, NO SCHOOL, NO WELFARE, NO FOOD STAMPS, NO BANK ACCOUNTS!

Snyder: "It's Trump Vs Schumer For All The Marbles"

Last Tuesday's shouting match in the Oval Office changed everything...

Authored by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

The stage is set for a battle of political willpower that could potentially be unlike anything that we have ever seen before in American history. Last Tuesday, there was a shouting match in the Oval Office that changed everything.
During a very heated exchange with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, President Trump boldly declared that the border wall will get built and that he would be “proud to shut down the government for border security”. The Democrats are going to take control of the House of Representatives in January, and so Trump realizes that it is now or never for his top campaign promise. If he doesn’t get funding for the wall now, he will never get it, and he will go into the 2020 election without anything to show the voters on his signature issue.

Trump has essentially painted himself into a corner, and maybe that is what he intended to do. Perhaps he understands that this is the time to take a stand, and perhaps he is ready to do whatever it takes to achieve his goal.
But if he is not willing to do whatever it takes, then he should never have made such bold statements. Because if he backs down now, he will lose all credibility with millions upon millions of American voters.
And Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has put himself in the exact same position. In the aftermath of Tuesday’s shouting match, Schumer appeared on the Senate floor and unequivocally declared that there will be no money for a border wall
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D.-N.Y.) said on the Senate floor on Thursday that there will be no funding for President Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border because the Democrats in Congress will never allow it.
“I want to be crystal clear. There will be no additional appropriations to pay for the border wall. It is done,”Schumer said.
There is no possibility of a compromise with Trump in that statement.
And he doubled down on his position during a subsequent interview with NBC News
Schumer argued that there are not enough votes for the full $5 billion authorization in either the House or Senate, a point that Republicans have contested. Accusing the president of putting government funding at risk to “throw a bone to his base,” Schumer said that it’s up to Republicans to get Trump to the table.
“They just have to have the guts to tell President Trump he’s off on the deep end here and all he is going to get with his temper tantrum is a shutdown. He will not get a wall,” Schumer said.
Somebody is going to come out of this as a big loser.
Will it be Chuck Schumer or will it be Donald Trump?
Whoever loses this cage match will essentially be neutered politically.
In the end, this fight doesn’t have a thing to do with money. The five billion dollars that Trump is asking for is a pittance when compared to the enormous sums of money that are poured into other programs. If Trump was asking for five billion dollars for roads that would be no problem at all.
Ultimately, what this is about is a battle of the wills. Donald Trump wants a border wall and the Democrats are absolutely determined not to give him one.
And so far the Democrats have succeeded. As Ann Coulter has noted, some fencing has been put up, but no construction of any portions of the border wall has taken place…
Coulter, who also writes a syndicated column, linked to an article in the Washington Post that details what new construction has occurred along the U.S.-Mexico border. The article reveals that none of the wall Trump pledged to build in his 2016 presidential campaign has been built.
Some new fencing — not a wall — has been erected in Calexico, Calif. But this area to fence was identified by the Border Patrol in 2009 and the material is “bollard fencing,” which is hollow steel beams spaced several inches apart, reported The Post.
    So this is it.
This is the moment when Trump will really show us how committed he is to a border wall, because if he doesn’t get funding now he will never, ever get it once the Democrats control the House.
And in order to get that funding, Donald Trump is going to have to force a government shutdown, and at this point it looks like that is precisely what is going to happen. The following comes from the Hill
It’s a perilous moment for the Grand Old Party. Either Trump folds and backs off his demand for the wall — the signature promise of his 2016 campaign — or the government will shut down over the holidays.
“The odds are 65/35 we’re shutting down. I’m not optimistic we’re going to see some kind of compromise on appropriations on Homeland Security,” said Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-Mich.), the freshman representative to the GOP leadership team. “I don’t see that they’re going to get done bickering.”
Like previous government shutdowns, not that much will actually change for the first few days.
But the longer a government shutdown lasts, the more painful it will become.
Things will really start getting hairy once some people eventually stop receiving government checks, and it will take a tremendous amount of resolve to keep going at that point.
This could be a defining point in Donald Trump’s presidency. If he is a man of his word, he will force a government shutdown and fight for what he believes.
But if he caves and gives the Democrats everything that they want once again, the entire nation will know that he is just another typical Republican.

Democrats need the votes of illegals and will never let trump have his wall now that they control the house. Trump needs to take away the freebies we give these parasites. Start by enforcing federal law and ban illegals from schools..

Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner: Agents Need the Wall

By Sandy Fitzgerald | Monday, 17 December 2018 02:28 PM

    Video at the page link

Border Patrol agents need more barriers and a wall to help them keep people from entering the United States illegally, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Monday.
"It's called impedance and denial," McAleenan told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "If someone can run across and disappear into a neighborhood it makes it a lot harder for agents to do their job...Border Patrol agents have always wanted more barriers on the border to help them do their job. It's the only way you can stop large groups from flowing across."
Out of the first investments that have gone into building and repairing the wall, a big difference is being seen in California and other locations, but more is needed.
Detection devices also are needed to help prevent illegal drugs from coming through the nation's ports of entry, and President Donald Trump's budget requests both, said McAleenan. Often, large groups of families are being used to divert agents, while smugglers come in with hard narcotics, and that's a "phenomenon that we need to stop," he added.
Families also are going to remote parts of the border and crossing in places where there is no wall, said McAleenan, but "any time we have a barrier it prevents that kind of activity."
Having troops at the border is also "tremendous," said McAleenan.
"They are a huge help," he said. "They have extended our surveillance capability, and provided us backup to prevent a large group from rushing the border. We really appreciate them there as the holiday approaches."
If the $5 billion Trump wants for the wall is approved, construction can begin quickly, as it is going through the Army corps of Engineers, McAleenan added.
The main priority sectors are in the Rio Grande Valley, which is the main crossing point for human smugglers, and "$5 billion would extend all the way into Laredo and help us shutdown the south Texas corridor and bolster El Paso, El Centro and California," said McAleenan.
