Bay State residents have forked over thousands of dollars to a legal fund in Arizona that will be used to defend the state’s controversial immigration law from a challenge by the Obama administration.

The Massachusetts donors have ponied up as little as $1 and as much as $200 to help Arizona defend the law against the U.S. Department of Justice, which claims the law is unconstitutional. All told, Bay State donors have given nearly $7,000 to the cause.

Several donors said they want to help Gov. Jan Brewer, whose visit to Boston this week has drawn both support and protests.

“She needs help from the federal government and I don’t think anybody is really interested in helping the citizens of Arizona,â€
