You can finish the rest of that phrase, can't you? That's right. "…to come to the aid of their country."

Those words became embedded in my consciousness when I took typing at North Texas State, attaining the dizzying rate of 40 words a minute. I must have typed that phrase 500 times, but I attached no particular meaning to it.

    I do now.

We've arrived at the most precarious time in this country since the Revolutionary War, when there was no reasonable or foreseeable chance for these little colonies to achieve their independence from England. Our Forefathers were vastly outnumbered, out-armed, out-trained, out-funded and with few allies to help them. Truly, any objective student of history must consider that only divine intervention can explain the many miraculous twists that enabled a small citizen militia to defeat the mighty British.

But there was a dream, a vision, an unquenchable yearning that fed the fervent prayers and sacrificial commitment of American farmers, artisans, ministers, businessmen, wives and mothers, and young people barely out of their teens – a yearning to be altogether free and independent.

    (Column continues below)

And when Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, Monroe, Adams and all the others met in the Constitutional Convention, they intended to draw up a blueprint for a nation that could stand on its own, owing nobody and defending its citizens against any and all challenges. And they did it, magnificently.

There's one circumstance I doubt they anticipated, though, at that early stage. They probably couldn't envision a time when our own elected leaders might conceive of a plan to surrender our sovereignty, our independence, our very borders to other countries, other governments!

But that circumstance seems to threaten our country right now. And, apparently, it has been underway for some time.

Have you heard rumblings about a North American Union – a combining of borders, economies and governments of the United States, Canada and Mexico? Into one vast community, just like the European Common Market? With the U.S. dollar, the Mexican peso, and the currency of Canada all merging into something called the "Amero"?

No? Well, that could be because the powerful men who are working to make this happen don't want you to hear about it…yet. It is apparent that most Americans don't want to be lumped in with the Mexican economy and political corruption or even with the admirable but comparatively timid and socialistic Canadian version of democracy. We, the great majority of us, want us to steer our own ship, achieve our own victories and make our own mistakes, beholden to no one else and free to change our course if we collectively choose to.

Would you like to change your address to Albuquerque, North Mexico? Or Pittsburgh, Southern Canada? Or even Atlanta, Georgia, North American Union? Not United States of America? Me neither!

The idea is so appalling, so unthinkable, so un-American, that you must think I'm kidding. But you need to go, quickly, to American Policy Center website or e-mail the organization and get the stark, undeniable facts about the well-orchestrated plan to make this very thing happen. You need to ask for the North American Union Fact Sheet, produced and distributed by the American Policy Center, before you make up your mind, one way or the other.

One of the things that grieves me most is that our president and his administration appear to be committed to this plan!

I campaigned for his father and for George W. Bush, and I've been a staunch defender of his desire to address our national problems and to find Osama bin Laden, depose Saddam Hussein and to encourage those who seek democratic self-government in the Middle East.

But I've been mystified by the concessions he's made to Mexico, the strange reticence to address our porous borders and the surging problem of illegal aliens. I've noted the long friendships with Mexican political leaders he and his family have nurtured, and I've really seen nothing wrong in that, thinking these relationships could be good for our two countries. But I never imagined that he might actually want to combine the two into one, with Canada thrown in!

There is already a plan in motion to establish a NAFTA Super Highway, to be the width of eight football fields, running from Mexico to Canada, right through the middle of the United States, with no direct inspections enforced! What does this portend for smugglers and terrorists? Can you hear the incredulous cheering from Osama's cave in Afghanistan (or wherever), as well as from the worldwide suicide stealth bombers of Al-Qaida?

According to the facts gathered by the APC, the official effort began March 23, 2005, after a summit held in Waco, Texas. It was attended by President Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox, and (then) Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. The three leaders announced the signing of an agreement to create common policies concerning various economic and security areas among the three nations.

The trilateral agreement, signed as a joint declaration, has not been submitted to Congress for review! There is no congressional oversight. The term "North American Union" is not used; the working name of the agreement is the "Security and Prosperity Partnership." Sounds benign enough, even a reasonable coalition. But there are very troubling aspects to it.

For one thing, the Bush Administration has denied the president ever signed an agreement with Canada and Mexico – the "Myths and Facts" section of the SPP web page blatantly says, "The SSP is a dialogue to increase security and enhance prosperity among the three countries. The SPP is not an agreement nor is it a treaty. In fact, no agreement was ever signed." [emphasis added]

However, former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, in his report about the SPP meeting in Waco, states flatly "Thus, on March 23, President Bush, President Fox and I signed the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America…" [emphasis added]

I sure don't like to doubt my president or his motives and actions. But we are not being given full explanations, nor is there evidence that Congress is being asked to "advise and consent." This is not the way our Constitutional democracy is supposed to work.

So, fellow citizens, now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country... to demand transparency, sovereignty and independence. I'd love to have all this alarm proved false, but this is no trivial matter. So, now is the time to be searching out the facts and insisting that the United States of America shall remain "one nation under God."
