NV-ACLU: Minor arrests leading to Vegas deportations

ACLU: Minor arrests leading to Vegas deportations

LAS VEGAS (AP) — American Civil Liberties Union officials are raising concerns that jail screenings by Las Vegas police under a federal immigration program are leading to deportations of people nabbed for only minor infractions.

Records obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal show that about one-third of the more than 3,300 Clark County jail inmates held for deportation in the first 18 months of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement 287(g) program were arrested on misdemeanor charges.

Some charges included jaywalking, fishing without a license, sleeping in public, possessing an unregistered animal and “walking on side of road.â€

Of the inmates police in Las Vegas have referred to ICE, 17 percent had prior deportations, according to police records. The majority were from Mexico, but others were from the United Kingdom, Poland, Russia, Italy, China, Vietnam and other countries.
Re-entry is a felony not a minor violation.

[quote]Peter Ashman, a Las Vegas immigration attorney and ACLU board member, said programs like 287(g) tend to damage relationships between police and immigrants. But Ashman acknowledged there was no evidence Las Vegas police were abusing what he termed “an inside-the-station enforcement tool.â€

Here's one comment from the source site worth posting:

I agree with you, gringo. You gave away the store a long time ago. Now it is ours. Soon your 4th of July will be only a memory; you will be celebrating 16 de Septiembre with us.

Yep, sadly you are correct, but as the post you quoted, most Americans don't seem to get the fact that they are giving away their country and have already given away most of California.

The only time something happens is when the rich are directly affected by illegal immigration. You can rest assured that many very wealthy men/women in Arizona are behind Brewer. Especially after the rancher was killed. Illegals don't live in rich people's neighborhoods or go to school with rich people's kids. Once that starts happening, then you will see a complete shift on the issue.

I'd like to tell the ACLU, that is the way it should be. If it were so minor, they'd not be going to jail to be screened. Minor offences get tickets, but if the illegal alien doesn't have legitimate I'd or a good address...

Gee this sounds a lot like the AZ law they're trying to keep from getting enacted.
Illegal aliens remain exempt from American laws, while they DEMAND American rights...

Well, if these people are not suppose to be here in the first place they are caught and deported, isn't that what happens if they're caught trying to cross the border? Sometimes small fish get caught in a big net. Seems about every direction we look hardly anyone wants our laws enforced.
