NV-Man, took Reno girl to Indiana held on deportation order

Man who took Reno girl to Indiana held on deportation order
    By Jaclyn O'Malley • jomalley@rgj.com • October 16, 2009

A 29-year-old Indiana man who fled the Reno area last month with his 16-year-old sister-in-law is being held in Chicago, accused of being in the country illegally in violation of a deportation order.

Parvinder Singh was arrested Tuesday at his Indiana home by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, officials said.

According to the Chicago Immigration Court records, Singh is being held indefinitely after a Miami immigration judge in February 1991 ordered he be returned to India.

Police said that Singh and Karamjit Kaur, his wife's sister, had planned to secretly leave the area to further their romance and live in Indiana, where Singh co-owns a convenience store. The marriage between Singh and Kaur's sister was arranged, according to their Sikh religion, police said.

Kaur's mother reported her missing Sept. 30 after she did not return from riding her bike outside their Stead home. The girl had been in the country less than a year and spoke little English. After a four-day search, police and FBI agents found the pair in a motel in Merrillville, Ind., a town where Singh lived about 30 miles east of Chicago.

Members of the Sikh community have donated $1,000 each to the Reno Police Department and Bring Bri Justice Foundation for their assistance in searching for Kaur.
