BREWSTER - Sheriff's investigators have charged a second illegal immigrant in the beating last week of a man at North Main Street and Michael Neuner Drive.

Bernabe Lopez, 21, of 84 Main St. is being held this morning at the Putnam County jail after investigators charged him in the beating that occurred June 1 around 3 a.m.

Lopez and his co-defendant, Tarrantino Perez, 37, of 15 Center St., Brewster, are charged with second-degree assault, a felony, in the assault.

Police said they beat their victim with a length of chain and belts.

Perez was captured shortly after the assault while Lopez was arrested Thursday by Investigator Thomas Corless, police said.

Both men are being held at the county jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

After investigators determined that the men are in the country illegally from Guatemala, jail officials reported them to federal immigration officials, per department policy, Sheriff Donald B. Smith said in a release yesterday announcing the second arrest.
