MANHATTAN. Immigrants who are victimized by violence or fraud can now report crimes without worrying about their immigration status, prosecutors announced yesterday.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said the newly created unit will address immigrant-related issues and prosecute people who prey on them, whether they are in New York legally or illegally. Attorneys in the unit, meanwhile, will focus on diverse matters related to scams and frauds perpetrated against immigrants, as well as construction safety and employment practices.

Assistant District Attorney Daysi Mejia, who will head the unit, said immigrants will be able to give reports to officials in several languages in person or over the telephone. The unit’s main number is 212-335-8900, officials said.
