NY farmers: We'll Cut Crops If We Lose Immigrants


NEW YORK (AP) -- Long Island farmers say they'll have to cut back on crop production or go out of business if the government doesn't solve their workers' immigrant status.

Rep. Tim Bishop held a town hall meeting in Calverton Saturday to hear the farmers' concerns.

Dozens of them told the Democrat they depend on immigrant labor. They say they fear they'll lose too many workers, citing crackdowns on undocumented immigrants in recent years.

As national immigration bills stalled, state and local governments around the country tried to regulate immigration on their own, focusing enforcement efforts on workplaces.

Bishop says he's also working with the farmers on another issue: deferment of estate taxes on land used for agriculture or conservation.

Its not immigrant labor , it is illegal immigrant labor .The obl would have a revolving door of illegals ,uneducated, and mostly mexicans that mexico wants to send to the U.S. so they do not have to take care of them and they are a source of income . After they are given scamnesty then we would get millions more losers and the revolving door would be turned again .

If you want to avoid losing illegal aliens do not hire them.

I hate being threatened like this. Let them go out of business then and sell the land to someone that knows how to farm without breaking the law...

It seems if the Gov't passes the illegal and immoral HR 875 bill no-one will be allowed to grow food unless they are a Gov't mandated business. So while Americans are losing their jobs, and homes and have limited resources for food, our Gov't is going to deprive our people of the right to grow their own food. We must ALL protest HR 875 before they try to cram this bill down our throats under the guise of helping us. It's all about money and profit for our Gov't and their criminal "special interest" Globalist thug groups.

The exception if they pass HR 875 of course will be Michelle Obama as she has a full garden every year. so it's OK for her to eat organic foods, but not the American people.

Employers hre illegals because the employers just want a better life.........they get a higher profit margin and pay no taxes to Gov't.

Me too, but not just for farmers, for everyone.

I support the FairTax that eliminates all these taxes, estate, income, capital gains, dividend, interest, social security and medicare and replaces them all with a national retail sales tax on the consumption of new products and services.

Based on what I see at Walmart, where the Americans are in the 20 items or less line with a smithering of purchases and digging for money when they check out and the illegal aliens and immigrants are in the big items line with 2 carts overflowing with no problem paying, I really don't care at this point if American farmers want to give it up.

They've already sold out the country whining about their labor costs when the cost of farm workers is less than 7% of the total cost of a food item Americans pay for at the retail level. 7%. These farmers are dishonest, they're cheaters, they're liars, and I'm sick of their whining. If they can't run a friggin' business in the US legally, then, hell yeah, get the frig out of it and let someone who can do it.

If there's not enough food at the store based on our current consumption as a result, then guess what? We'll eat less, grow our own, pay more for it, or exercise some combination of the 3.

Besides, if we get all these illegal aliens out of here and control our population growth from immigration, legal and illegal, we'll have plenty of food.

Do a garden this YEAR, everyone
