Missouri Gov. Begins Fight Against Employing Illegal

Missouri Governor Begins Fight Against Employing Illegal Immigrants

According to a recently published State of Missouri Governor's Office press release, Missouri Govenor Matt Blunt has sent a letter to the Missouri Housing Development Commission about illegal immigrants in Missouri housing and workplaces. The letter proposes that a law be passed that would include possible sanctions including a lifetime bans of contractors and developers who hire illegal workers knowingly or without doing proper background checks of the potential employees.

In a letter to the Missouri Housing Development Commission, Governor Blunt stated, "I have followed some of the recent developments regarding housing development and illegal immigration. The problem of illegal immigration is a complicated and often emotional issue. I encourage thoughtful and serious dialogue such as what you are undertaking."

It was in Governor Blunt's letter that he suggested lifetimes bans from future contracts with the state for developers and contractors who hire illegal immigrants and know about it. This could mean road construction companies, building developers, even government lawnscapers.

Aside from this, the Governor is also encouraging businesses all over the state to check the status and backgrounds of their workers using tools like the Basic Pilot program distributed by the Department of Homeland Security. This will easily prevent the possibility of hiring illegal immigrants and keep employers out of trouble with the state and the federal government.

Governor Blunt is also pushing for a mandatory list that will give out the names of contractors who hire illegal workers so that developers know not to use them and can be safe from getting in trouble.

The Governor started his fight against illegal work in Missouri after he discovered that a state hired contractor employed illegal workers. The state has no tolerance policies when it comes to cases like this. The specific incident was a state contract with Sam's Janitorial Services. They were banned from doing any more business with the state after law enforcement found out that they employed several illegal workers who were employed under fake documents.

"Illegals should be able to get jobs," said small St. Louis business owner Frank Caldwell. "Other than just banning businesses, they need to get the illegal workers out so they don't just try to work at another facility. You have to stop at the source. I always do background checks for my employees, everyone should. It saves money and prevents you from problems with the state and the government. It's just common sense too. You may think it wastes time and that you need the cheap labor, but it isn't worth it."
