NY: Rally for migrant workers draws 30 people

Rally for migrant workers draws 30 people
Posted by Maureen Sieh August 10, 2007 3:46PM

About 30 people participated in a noon rally today to draw attention to the plight of migrant workers.

The rally, organized by the Central New York Workers Rights Center, came two days after border patrol officers picked up and jailed two migrant workers injured in a propane explosion two years ago in Oswego County.

Luicio Jimenez and Ledis Vasquez were heading from Oswego to Syracuse for a medical appointment at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. They're being held in the Cayuga County jail.

The rally began at Plymouth Congregation Church and ended at the United States Immigration Service office, 412 S. Warren St.

Pat Rector, coordinator of the workers rights group, led the group in a chant.
She chanted, "What do we want?''

    The marchers responded, "Justice.''

"I really think it's wrong what they're doing to immigrants,'' said Luis Santiago, who moved to Syracuse from Puerto Rico. "People are coming here to work. They don't do crimes. People are being harassed.''

Staff writer Maureen Sieh will have a full report in Saturday's Post-Standard.

Delusional much Mr. Santiago? What part of illegal don't these people understand? Also why do they think because allegedly they come here to work, its okay and it legitimizes their lawlessness and voids the fact that they are alien trespassers?
