State Senate and Assembly Return to the Capitol
ALBANY - There is unfinished business at the State Capitol. And today state lawmakers are coming back to Albany to try and tend to it.
The State Senate meets in special session today. Senators are expected to confirm some appointees and act on legislation to block Governor Eliot Spitzer's plan to issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens.
The State Assembly is coming back to town tonight. They'll conference, and plan to go into session tomorrow.
Other issues on the table, though not at all guaranteed to get attention, include traffic decongestion in Manhattan, property tax rebates for seniors, campaign finance reform, and capital projects upstate.
A rally was held on the steps of the Capitol at noon, by New Yorkers Against Driver's Licenses For Illegal Aliens, a non-partisan advocacy group. They are protesting the governor's policy to allow immigrants to get a drivers license without a social security number.
One speaker at the rally was Rensselaer County's clerk, Frank Merola. Merola filed a lawsuit on his own today, seeking to block the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles from implementing the drivers license directive.
"I'm doing this to stop the nonsense in its tracks," he told News Channel 13.
Meanwhile, Governor Eliott Spitzer is lining up support. His office released a statement saying that William Bratton is backing the license plan. Bratton is the former Commissioner of the New York City Police Department and current Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. The statement says the Bratton believes this license plan will improve the ability to fight crime and terrorism and make roads safer.
Bill Lambdin will have more on this story tonight on Newschannel 13.

This was a question posed from one Senator to another today on the New York Senate floor.
Should DMV share information with law enforcement? They will not unless they are told to through a court order. Immigration information will not be volunteered unless this is done.
Protection for illegals again.
Psalm 91Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
