SoCal city ends driver's license checkpoints

SoCal city ends driver's license checkpoints

    June 19, 2010 3:44 PM ET

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California city is no longer conducting driver's license-only stops after civil rights groups criticized that they targeted illegal immigrants.

Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher told the North County Times in Saturday's editions that checkpoints have been expanded to include other inspections including vehicle registration, insurance and seat belt use.

The change came after the American Civil Liberties Union and a coalition of Hispanic groups demanded that the city with a burgeoning Latino population change its driver's license checkpoints.

The Escondido Police Department continues to hold sobriety checkpoints that includes driver's license checks.

so in other words, they admit they are breaking the law, they are basically stating that latinos break this law routinely, and they just dont want them stopped

Don't see what the big diff is. Checkpoints have been done for decades in southern CA, mainly to check for drunk drivers. At least they will still do those which will include driver's license checks.

Ditto! They are doing the same thing, just under a broader definition to keep the civil rights zealots off their backs.
