NYC Immigrant Beaten in Apparent Hate Attack Dies

NYC Immigrant Beaten in Apparent Hate Attack Dies

    Saturday, December 13, 2008 11:00 PM

NEW YORK -- An Ecuadorean immigrant viciously beaten by men who yelled anti-Hispanic and anti-gay slurs at him and his brother has died, nearly a week after the attack.

Jose Sucuzhanay died late Friday at Elmurst Hospital as his mother was en route from Ecuador to see him, spokesman Francisco Moya said. Sucuzhanay, a 31-year-old real estate broker, had been listed in critical condition since the assault early Dec. 7.

Police were searching for three suspects in the attack. The New York Police Department's hate crime task force is investigating what prosecutors have called an appalling eruption of bigotry.

Sucuzhanay (suh-KOO-chen-eye) and his brother Romel, 38, were walking arm-in-arm after a night out when a sport utility vehicle pulled up near them at a Brooklyn stoplight, police said.

Witnesses said they heard the men in the car shouting anti-gay and anti-Hispanic slurs at the brothers. The attackers jumped out of the car and smashed a beer bottle over Jose Sucuzhanay's head, hit him in the head with an aluminum baseball bat and kicked him, police said. Romel Sucuzhanay was able to get away; the attackers drove off after he returned and said he had called police, authorities said.

His mother, Julia Quintuna, obtained a humanitarian visa late this week to visit her injured son. She landed Saturday only to learn that he had died, Moya said.

There are a lot of questions unanswered but if the incident happened as described it could have happened to anyone. If the two brothers were out drinking and wanted to keep each other from falloing down or just felt good after settling an argument amicably I can empathize and even if they were two gays the reaction to their walking arm in arm is overblown. Still the incident should not serve as an excuse to amnesty anyone.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

I agree no amnesty although this crime was reprehensible. Even though I adamantly oppose illegal immigration any display of violence towards anyone illegally here is totally uncalled for and only reduces our society to the same level of lawlessness and violence endemic to third world countries from which illegal aliens came.
There is no freedom without the law. Remember our veterans whose sacrifices allow us to live in freedom.

The of crime against hispanics is still dwarfed by the crime committed by the ILLEGAL ALIENS residing in this country illegally. This crime could represent a resounding frustration on the part of our fellow ciitzens with the lack of enforcement from our government even though there are no excusses for this citizen's behavior and I hope he pays dearly. The frustration on the hispanic side spawned by their demand for immigration reform holds no water whatsoever. ILLEGAL ALIENS have no other rights beyond basic human (food, water and medical) while they are being deported. They have no argument about the validity of their demands.
