New York State Senate Republicans issued this week a budget resolution that would prevent local governments protecting undocumented immigrants from the federal government, according to The New York Daily News.

The measure prohibits local governmental entities, including local police departments and district attorney’s offices, from “adopting laws or policies which impede or interfere with the enforcement of federal homeland security laws.”

The justification written in the text of the measure says that in the past four years alone, 121 undocumented immigrants with criminal records were charged with murder after their release from deportation proceedings.

In a state as diverse as New York, specifically within New York City, the measure was criticized by Francisco Moya, an assemblyman representing the 39th district.

“To hold municipalities, agencies, and counties hostage in order to pander to the most extreme parts of their party is unacceptable,” Moya told the News.
